My Bias Results

After taking the "Rate My Bias" test on AllSides, it determined that I am around the center. This makes sense to me, as I can lean left on some issues, and right on others, but I kind of thought I would have leaned more to the left. Maybe the test is flawed? Who knows! I do think it's important to be aware of the bias in news, and no matter the accuracy of this test, I think it's good that we look at our own bias with a test like this.

NewsWeek: Mary Trump Calls Jon Stewart a 'Danger to Democracy'

Last week Jon Stewart returned to the daily show. He was making fun of both US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Mary Trump, is Donald's neice and she is NOT a fan of her uncle. She is basically callling out Jon Stewart and saying he is a danger to democracy because he is making fun of BOTH Biden and Trump. She believes that Trump is nowhere near the quality of president that Biden is, and by making fun of Biden and comparing the two, this might not be a good thing.

Washington Times: Liberals fume as Jon Stewart mocks Biden in ‘Daily Show’ return

In this version of the story, it also talks about how Jon Stewart was poking fun at both Biden and Trump. However they really focus on how upset the Left-Liberals are "fuming" over the fact that Biden was also being ripped apart alongside Trump by Stewart.

One quote from the article (which was written by the Right) says, "Other left-wing and anti-Trump grousing included in a Fox News roundup of reactions came from the Daily Beast — “using his old platform to tell Americans that their two choices for president are both not that different and equally terrible” — and former Rep. Joe Walsh — “boring, tired, not helpful, way too easy of a take.”

When I Googled the word "Grousing", it means to complain pettily. So that was a shot at the Left!

Jon Stewart’s return to ‘The Daily Show’ felt familiar to those who missed him while he was away

In this version, Jon Stewart is being praised for being back in the saddle of the Daily Show. The writer acknowledges that he made fun of both Trump and Biden, but they are more so focusing on his "comedic genius."

One quote that was used to show off Stewart's welcoming back to the chair: "No, Jon Stewart really wasn’t sitting at his desk at Comedy Central for the last nine years, waiting for someone to turn the lights back on.

Yet it almost felt that way during Stewart’s return to “The Daily Show” Monday night. His signature moves — blunt satire, facial grimaces, incisive use of video and some occasional lectures — were all intact. Public figures are served notice that the media’s sharpest bull detector is back on the job."

They also left this little note at the end, which really makes Stewart look like a good guy, "During his time away, Stewart spent time as an activist fighting to get benefits for Sept. 11, 2001, responders and two years hosting “The Problem with Jon Stewart” on the Apple TV+ streaming service. He made a subtle allusion to the latter on Monday, saying he would be making jokes about China and AI, subjects that reportedly made Apple uncomfortable before axing the show."

Closing Thoughts

I think the biggest thing to pay attention to is the headlines, as well as the related stories that are posted on the websites. For instance, on the Right's Washington Times, there was a lot of anti-Biden and pro-Trump stories. I also thought that looking a little closer, the heart of the stories were similar, but there were little quotes that I thought were definitely written with bias.

I think doing a little research on the author's themselves, and Googling unfamiliar terms, looking closer at the pictures used in news stories are all things to look for when trying to determine bias.
