My grandfather was able to stay there at his house and work in his nursery, planting and picking flowing in Encinitas. The reason my grandfather came from Mexicali was because he was one of nine children and even though his parents both worked, there was never enough money for food or a better future. Within 4 years my grandfather would become a car painter at Terrys Auto Body in Oceanside. There he worked for 30 years as a head painter for luxury cars. The first one was saving some money to pay to cross over. Then he did not feel welcomed in his uncle's house. He was made to work in the nursery for $12 dollars a week. They would even charge him for food. Another obstacle was not knowing how to speak English. He would be very homesick because he was only 17 in another country.
