Contrarily sex is a biological constructed definition of men and women. Gender refers to the roles and functions associated with men and women both privately and publicly. Gender plays a crucial role in the Caribbean as gender equality and equity exist. Gender equality is the access to opportunities or rights which are not determined by gender whereas, gender equity refers to the state of fair treatment given to men and woman according to their respective needs. Four aspects were learnt about Gender in the Caribbean in the course Caribbean Civilization namely, the importance of gender to Caribbean Civilization, the effects and application of knowledge on the social or geographical environment, understanding how the problem of regional importance as reflected on the news and to provide your opinions based on what was learnt in the course.

In some Caribbean countries, they believe that the patriarchal system is still majorly present. They assume that men can only be the sole bread winner of the household and that women will remain as their subordinate. Today , both men and women are taking the steps to change the traditional meaning of gender roles and emerge a new way of thinking of gender relations. The reconstruction of the political and social economy altered these gender relations. Men and women conclude that their sex does not determine their gender as it has two separate meanings. Today, because some Caribbean countries are still connected to the tradition way of the roles and responsibilities of  men and women can negatively interfere with the Caribbean Civilization. This is so as some of the most horrific forms of violence are taking place in some Caribbean Islands, consequently causing some of these gender discriminated persons to hide because the fear of being discriminated is instilled within them. This instillation of fear causes victims of gender discrimination not to access  public facilities thus it undermines the educational system, legal system and health system in the Caribbean. To the contrary, other Caribbean Islands act against and uplift victims of gender discrimination. They allow persons of both genders to participate in any roles, responsibilities, functions and activities that they both enjoy. Trinidad and Tobago is an example of the changes of tradition gender roles. However, there are some parts of the island that maneuvered their way to the modern side of gender roles and there are some sectors that still abide by the traditional gender roles. The patriarchal system still exist as men are still dominant in the household, workplace and in the political system. On the other hand, women are still are seen as incapable of being greater than or equal to men.They still cook, clean and take care of their children without help from their husbands. Herman Spencer and Patrick Geddes advanced the idea that men are seen as active and women are passive in both the private and public spear. Conversely, both men and women are adopting modern aspect of gender roles. They are both dominant in the household, likewise in the workplace and the political system. Men are pursuing careers in the model, domestic, hair styling and make-up industry. Whilst, women are attaining job as athletes, plumbers, and electricians. It was understood that Trinidad and Tobago share both aspects of gender roles as some still believed that men and women share different roles and responsibilities which should not change whereas, some conclude that men and women share different roles and responsibilities but it is not fixed. Despite the evolution of gender roles today, the reactions of some men are still negative. They believe that they should not be forced to debate power and women should remain inferior. The traditional belief of the subordinate role of women is often noticeable in the Caribbean. This is seen through the rapid increase of domestic violence against women over the recent years. Additionally, it is seen in the development of the political system as there are few female Presidents or Prime Ministers. Political systems that operates under a female  Prime Minster often surround themselves with a male dominant Parliament. This male domination usually influences the  Prime Ministers' decisions. According to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley “ I am not in your bedroom, I am not in your choice of men.” He says that women should share the blame in their choice of partners. Moreover, women tend to be fearful of the 'glass ceiling effect' which prevents women from attaining high positions in institutions. "Women must earn less than men, because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent."  -Janusz Korwin-Mikke. Gender inequality in the Caribbean can be greatly influenced by Internationals and is becoming a growing issue that should be addressed.

The course Caribbean Civilization brought awareness to many issues that the Caribbean region faced. The Caribbean has developed as it relates to gender roles and responsibilities. However, historical artifacts and traditions are still present. Gender as a socially constructed issue in the Caribbean has been modernized, nonetheless historical roles still prevail. Gender inequality stems from the biblical days as St. Augustine depicted "Eve"  to be the " wicked woman" and the "devil's gateway" . Thus, women were not allowed to act as priests, preachers or were not allowed to speak in churches. This depiction of women is present today in political and social intuitions. Males tend to feel and sense of threat as woman are becoming independent and strive to attain the same roles and responsibilities as men. Prominent women such as Barbara Bush and Patricia Mohammed paved roads for women to become active instead of passive. Besides these prominent women, there was Hilary Beckles. He spoke against women discrimination which also resulted in the shaping of the Caribbean.
