To increase rigor within the classroom students must have those foundational math concepts mastered. Once foundational skills have been mastered, the teacher can increase rigor by having the students apply the skills rather than mimic the procedures. </div>]]></description>

While that is a good stepping stone, it is not rigor. Students need to not just 'copy' a teachers way to solve the problem but have true understanding behind the procedure.</p>]]></description>

Creating rigorous activities and assessments to meet the diverse needs of all students can be challenging for me to keep up with. It is hard to find the time to find a balance between challenging advanced learners and providing necessary support for struggling students.          <description><![CDATA[<p>the large class sizes with limited adult support.  I absolutely love teaching small groups and I'm proud of the tasks and activities I use at my table (transferring their knowledge in new ways-rigorous), but small groups can take up to an hour (4 groups of 6 students each rotating every 15 minutes).  I struggle to keep the students away from the table thinking and working independently.  It is a lot to ask a first grade to work independently for 45 minutes, even if their stations away from the table vary (technology, partner game, and independent work).  Another challenge is the resources provided do not often include activities to teach at a deeper level.  Limited planning time to analyze data and create lessons that challenge students is another challenge.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>convincing math teachers, especially at the secondary level, that flexibility is needed to increase rigor and that harder does not equal more rigorous. As an instructional coach, it is proven challenging to get secondary math teachers to change strategies and show flexibility in the process of how math happens. It will require relooking at lessons and differentiating, which will take time. It is also a challenge to fit all the content into the time they have before the testing occurs, and adding anything else (they claim) doesn't allow them to get through the material.</p>]]></description>

Now that they are here in 4th grade, they have a lot of trouble focusing and staying on task.  Working in groups presents its own challenges this year that I do not usually have to work around. SO I find it very hard to work with small groups at their own levels.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>"adequate time and sufficient support."</p><p>Even though the Common Core articles all state that standards were eliminated, I do believe that more or at least more complicated standards were added to 8th-grade math.  I have enough time to challenge the average 8th-grade student, but there is not enough time to meet the rigor needs of struggling and high-achieving students.</p><p>If I could not have more time, more support would help me.  If I had a co-teacher or a part time co-teacher, one of us could assist struggling students while the other worked with high-achieving students.</p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>planning time! This year I have student of many levels and many different needs/learning styles. If I really sat down and planned out different things for each of those students I feel I would then need to have individual lessons for each of them also helping them along the way. I already teach reading and math in small groups to try and help with this, but that is not even breaking it down enough for all of the different learning levels I have. </p>]]></description>

The majority of our lessons are whole group and focus on foundational skills. In addition, I can find it hard to get my kiddos to think deeply and critically.
