I was observing a physical education class at Las Palmas Middle School during their dance lesson. Students have to demonstrate competency in multiple dances. The teacher used dances typically done at a quinceanera. The students went CRAZY and got very excited and passionate about dance, which I have never seen. It is a great example of adapting your curriculum to fit the culture of your students.

I plan I leaning about my students and trying to find a way to connect their cultural backgrounds with something we are learning about. I also plan on motivating and showing different professions being done by the cultures of my students. If I live in a predominantly African American community, I would provide inspirational quotes from famous Black people and find people working in specific fields that represent students.

My fondest English class memories are from Sophomore year of high school. Our class had many creative writing projects that asked students to use their own cultures, but not in obvious, overt ways that are sometimes offputting. We also read many novels from authors around the world, including ones who generally aren't read in America.
