My passion project is about children that are in need of better living conditions. Children around the world in poor countries have little access to safe drinking water, better nutrition, and medicine. Children in poor countries like Laos also need access to education. I feel it is very important for children in every country should have a right to receive education. This needs to be improved in poor countries where schools need to be built. UNICEF is an organization that can help provide clean water to provide the children by funding online.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF6cQh3eABg
This is a video that discusses the subject of improving education in Laos. Most people in Laos are in poverty, and in need of education. Most of the rural families live in the poorest, most remote areas with little access to any technology or school. Many live in villages and on mountains which make it difficult for children to get to school. The infrastructure of the schools are not great either so when weather is bad, it discourages children from going. The Lao-Australian Basic Education Project supplied schools with textbooks and built new schools. There was also 4,000 teachers receiving in-service training. My passion project was inspired by this project. By building safer, new schools, children will have motivation to go to school, despite the weather.

This article discusses the importance of hygiene in Southeast Asia including Laos. This organization was planning to provide health/hygiene classes to new schools for children. The first step is to have access to clean water. Second was to have classes to promote good hygiene to children by teaching them how to wash hands and how to brush teeth. Clean water will decrease the amount of disease in the country. Illnesses such as intestinal worms and diarrhea are occurring in these countries and they have decreased because of the access to clean water.

It is now part of the law that children are to be allowed to have education. Before education became important parents in rural Laos thought it was only important for the males to go to school. Nowadays the views have changed and many females enroll in schools. Children are expected to go to school and get a job that can help their home village. Children that are able to go to primary school are in many different age groups but they are put in classes by their level of learning.

A mother of a family that live on rural land was shown carrying two buckets of water on a stick that she carried with her shoulders. Her body ached and the sickness in her family was because of the water. Now that tap water fountains were built near her village, her family doesn't get sick as much and their lives are easier. They don't have to worry about what bacteria lived in the water they drank and their bodies aren't put to hard work just to get water like they used to. Increased access to water has shown to have positive impacts to families in rural Laos and slowly society will grow.

Many children that live in rural villages cannot make it to school because they are needed at home. 80% of the population relies on agriculture and about 40% of the population is in poverty. The girls have the responsibility to take care of younger siblings and help the mother with planting while the boys help their father with the farmland. Many times schools are far away as well so education for the youth in rural lands are inconvenient for families. A lot of boys were educated more than girls. Nowadays parents understand that education is important to all of their kids.

There is also information on each picture to describe how they live. 80% of the population in Laos are heavily dependent on agriculture. This means that most people live in rural areas. Most of their diet includes rice. Sometimes rice is the only food to eat when there are other food shortages. The land can only take so much and then it becomes dry and not fertile. Because they are dependent on agricultural life, these food shortages and dry seasons come often. The geographic conditions restrict agricultural production and development and since most are in poverty, it challenges their way of living even more.

It is an effective way of learning because it is not as abstract as using just words. For example, people recognize brands just by looking at the logo. The image is engraved in their brain and more memorable because it isn't lost in a jumble of words in their heads. People visualize the things that they have seen before. It is easier to describe what they were seeing and feeling so they have a more accurate description of that memory. There are many different types of visual learning tools such as; photos, illustrations, icons, sketches, maps and more.

By having a display with pictures and information on it, teens will be attracted to it. It is a bigger display that catches attention and they will be drawn to it. I feel by making a display, younger generations will be more attracted and interested in my passion project. Education and water are basic essentials to life. It is important for younger generations to understand this problem and get involved. Visuals are shown to be effective for people to learn and understand the subject. Writing a paper or doing a podcast won't be as effective as making a display with pictures on it for teens. If I wrote a paper and my target audience was teens, there would be less interest because many teens these days don't want to read. A visual display would attract them and interest them effectively.
