Later in the passage the narrator makes it apparent that Mcteague is content with his accomplishments, although his dreams appear to be unimportant. McTeague's feelings of "his life [being] a success" falls short to the narrators pre-inscribed ideology of what a comfortable living/work environment looks like. The narrator's bias attitude greatly influences the reader and how he/she perceives McTeague. His descriptions lead the reader towards a more pitiful mood of the whole situation. The "Lorenzo de' Medici" painting displays McTeague's need for normality in his workplace. He wants to look right as a business owner. Most of the items in his establishment serve no true purpose and are showcased simply because they appeal to McTeague.

In the third paragraph the narrator’s bias becomes more apparent with his thinly veiled mockery of McTeague’s ambitions. After McTeague opened his “Dental Parlors” the narrator suggests that “[McTeague] felt that his life was a success;” the narrator mockingly reveals the irony of the name since the business occupies only one room. The narrator’s condescension continues as he illustrates the discrepancies in McTeague’s attempts to create a proper establishment such as “ [the] washstand…where he manufacture[s] his moulds “ and “[the] three chairs, a bargain at the second-hand store”, which further identify the narrator’s belittling attitude. Despite this, the narrator’s description of the parlor indicates his hidden admiration for McTeague’s simplistic desires. The narrator depicts “the military precision” of McTeague’s dental chairs and the “small marble-topped center table covered with back numbers of ‘The American System of Dentistry,’” which reveals the narrator’s appreciation of McTeague’s passion for dentistry; this further exhibits the narrator’s conflicted opinion of McTeague.

In the second section of the excerpt, the narrator continues to express his views on McTeague. The narrator talks McTeague’s attention to detail by commenting “…against the wall with military precision.” By describing it in such a manner, the narrator conveys his admiration for McTeague through positively looking at his work ethic and desire for organization. The narrator is trying to state the idea that even though McTeague does not have much to work with, he pushes to do his best. The narrator follows this by commenting on McTeague’s workspace by saying “The whole place exhaled a minged odor of bedding….” The intent of the narrator by saying this was to state the concept that he is hardworking and diligent, but is situationally deficient. The manner that the narrator depicts this description is stated in a resentful manner. _id":nض_ȓv

         \/\/

In the second paragraph the narrator transitions to a more indirect description of Mcteague, using his environment to characterize his simple but ambitious lifestyle. He comments that after opening his “Dental Parlor”, Mcteague “felt that his life was a success.” Following this sentence, the narrator then criticizes Mcteague’s parlor stating that “there was but one room.” McTeague views his business as impressive, contradictory, the narrator views it as mediocre. For example, the narrator describes McTeague’s room, including his collection of dental books such as “The American System of Dentistry” and “Allen’s Practical Dentist”, giving meticulous attention to the details in his office considering the chairs arranged in “military precision.” This reveals that the narrator acknowledges Mcteague’s dedication to his trade, but ends by highlighting his condescending appreciation by commenting on the “odor”. This leaves the audience with a lasting flawed impression of McTeague.
