Downton Abbey : episode 1

Downton Abbey is a domain where the Grantham family lives. The family comprises Lord Grantham, Lady Grantham, their son Patrick, and their daughters. The older one is named Mary. Also, maids take care of the family and run the house. There is Anna, the head housemaid, Miss O’Brien the ladyship’s maid, Mr. Carson the butler, Thomas the first footman, … and John Bates the new valet with a leg disability.

Patrick went on a boat with Mr. Grantham‘s cousin named Mr. Crawley. Unfortunately, the boat has sunk and the men seem dead because they cannot be found. Those men are the heirs of Mr. Grantham. So, the man is in a complicated position because the fortune he got from his wife and his domain will be given to a stranger when he dies because his older daughter, a woman cannot inherit. Unless he goes against the law that forbids his daughter to inherit the fortune and the estate but there is no way to make her have the title.

The duke came to the estate after hearing the news. He seems to have too much interest in Mary. Mr. Grantham has understood where this interest comes from and has warned the duke that Mary won't have more money. Suddenly the interest of the duke in Mary seems to have disappeared and we discover he has a relationship with Thomas. It was Thomas who has sent a telegram to the duke to inform him about the situation. Despite his loyalty to him, the duke doesn’t want to continue the relationship and he burns the letters they sent each other to be sure no one will find out.

My opinion about the episode is generally positive. I like the accent of the actors and the atmosphere of the series. But I do have some criticisms to make. The beginning was boring. The presentation of the characters was too long and the arguments between the maids were not exciting. I almost stopped watching to be honest. Finally, the episode ends with the arrival of the duke. His bad behavior is confusing. It is very interesting to watch and as I said I think that the introduction was long but it was necessary to understand.

She could have used the money to pay her debts but seeing her two daughters unhappy and no longer talking to her, she decides to use it to travel. Lily, the youngest, is being bullied at school and Chloe, a teenager who always chooses the wrong boyfriends. So they go on a camping-car trip to Scandinavia. During this trip, they went from town to town. Their relationships improved and they met a lot of people, including a man who became the mother's partner. He has a young autistic boy who became Lily's friend.
I really liked this book because I found the characters very nice. Lily made me laugh several times with her little jokes. I also really enjoyed their journey. It's an experience I would like to live one day. Also, it was an easy-to-read book, ideal to relax.

It is advisable to change your habits. But the problem is that we forget to tell people that it's complicated and that it brings emotional discomfort to stop unhealthy habits and for healthy ones. So people tend to stop and think that they have done something wrong if they don't know it.
Also, the person says that having a deep connection with someone doesn't mean you're going to spend your whole life with them. People are there to teach us lessons.
Finally, we need to improve our listening skills by repeating the last word they said and trying to understand the meaning behind what people say.
Also, we need to be more compassionate towards ourselves, to learn to put things into perspective when we have not achieved all our tasks.

The podcast was interesting. It challenges my way of seeing things. I have indeed tried to change my habits several times and failed, then stopped because it was exhausting. I didn't realize that this was part of the process.
I think that this way of looking at relationships avoids a lot of disappointment and helps with the acceptance of a relationship ends.
However, I didn't understand the connection with finding more gratitude. It should have been explained more clearly.

The speaker advises us to talk to new people or old friends because those around us tend to have the same information as we do. They advise us to go through our social networks and to contact people that we haven't spoken to for a while.
Also, if there's something you want, you have to fight for it because you don't want to be the person who didn't dare in 30 years. However, you must not forget to have a second plan in case it doesn't work.
You have to keep in mind that a successful career is not only about achieving a lot but also about being nice to the people around you because a talented and nice person is the dream person to work with.

The podcast is interesting and motivating but I find that in real life it is very awkward to contact someone you haven't been in touch with for a long time.

It is advisable to start a compost but it attracts rats.
Another person is trying to raise awareness by giving lectures. They try to get people to live in connection with nature. For this, he talks about the food that is given by nature. He says that this is a way to interest everyone.
Also, you have to use technology to inform people. For example, there is a platform that raises awareness among children. They encourage them to record the time of sunrise and sunset with their parents so they can see the cycle of life.
A climate activist says that it's good to recycle and take secondhand, but it's not enough. People need to be more engaged and become climate activists too.
The podcast was interesting but I found that there is a lack of concrete advice. For example, they talk about the rat problem but they don't say how to fight against rats in the compost.

She then defends herself, explaining that she would like to become a secretary. This creates tension in the group of maids.
The one with the limp leg goes to buy a prosthesis to be like the others but it causes him a lot of pain.

I stopped watching the episode because I find the series too boring. This series is about following the life of a family. Nothing exciting or surprising happens.
