Their about page and homepage are designed as illustrations seamlessly integrated with the surrounding artwork. While visually appealing, I initially didn’t realise that clicking on the illustration would take me to different sections. Simplifying the design by removing the surrounding illustrations could make navigation clearer.

"Try to plan/research alongside the making, flipping back and forth - it doesn’t need to be such a separate process. Your plan is clear but there’s no reason that you can’t start making images and versions right away as you’re developing a story, because making it is also how you work out what works and what doesn’t. If you have 3 weeks at the end to make your book you’ll run into problems or things you want to improve. Start making it in the first week, then make it better."

I've always had teaching in the back of my head as i enjoyed sharing my knowledge and helping others.

growing up i knew i wanted to something creative with my life but school only provided me with the option of fine arts. i knew i definitely did’nt want to a fine art degree. when i become a art teacher i aim to help students realise the wide array of things they can do.

Try to get experience in the classroom, if not write down you're are arranging your experience and make sure to follow through with your plan. This helps with the interview more than the application. You can also talk about classroom intentions if you don't have the experience yet.

Teacher training can be tough so try to apply for school\uni close to you.

1000 words, do not write unnecessary words.

Statement should be about what you can bring not what you can gain.

For primary school:

Find some really good reasons why you want to teach in primary schools not generic responses like you want to make difference early on.

You need to show your love and passion for learning.

Look at National curriculum

Tell them of your hobbies and how the children can benefit from that for example. If you like to read, research and go to libraries to find out really good book to read to children. They like this kind of stuff.

Let them see and know your passion for teaching a wide range of subjects

However, some issues became apparent. I noticed that the white areas on the saree didn’t reproduce well, and the trees needed further editing to remove unwanted marks for a cleaner look.

• Experimenting with layout pushing to make the pages more dynamic and engaging.

• Planning for printing to ensure the final product meets professional standards.

• Making the book feel more festive to better reflect the celebratory nature of the subject matter.

While a storybook is a great format, a handbook made more sense to me because it allows for step-by-step guides on how to get involved and enjoy the festival. This shift in focus led me to create a completely non-fiction book, rather than a story-driven non-fiction book.

However, looking back now, I believe this might be why my spreads weren’t as interesting as they could have been, I didn’t dedicate enough time to carefully planning and refining the layout.

I thoroughly enjoyed researching the festival, collecting information, and gathering images, but working on character designs and storyboarding was particularly stressful and demotivating. This was largely because I had no prior experience with character design and was also tasked with creating an entire story plot, which felt overwhelming.

In my tutorials, I realised I wasn’t pushing myself to be as creative as I could be. I was caught up worrying about the deadline and finishing the book on time, so I ended up creating images that were straightforward and easy to read without considering more creative ways to present the information in a fun and engaging way.

I recognised that my pictures needed to be the main focus, with the text supporting them, not the other way around. For the next spreads, I was determined to explore any way I could make them more interesting within the time frame I had and was fully dedicated to doing so.

One key takeaway from this project is that whenever I feel stuck or lost, I just need to start making something. Through the process, I’ll find a way to make the project work and discover a clear direction.

I also enjoyed creating the picture book and refining it as I went along. I think this approach helped me focus on the bigger picture instead of getting stuck on small details.

I had originally thought I would be able to complete 28 pages, but I only managed 22. Something that held me back was how much editing was required. Since all my work was hand-drawn, I had to edit every single image in Photoshop, which took more time than I anticipated. Although I enjoy working with coloured pencils, it is time-consuming. To increase my workflow and consistency, I may explore digital painting methods in the future.

Moving forward, I plan to create character turnarounds to maintain consistency. I will also document exactly what I do to edit each piece to make my workflow faster.

I’m also considering sending this project to a publishing house, as the work I’ve produced in this unit could serve as a draft.

In conclusion, this unit has given me valuable experience in illustrating a picture book. I didn’t think I could complete one in such a short time, and although I didn’t finish the full 28 pages, I’m glad I completed most of it.

I look forward to improving my drawing skills and learning more about illustrating picture books after the course.
