132 Why is the Church holy?

Whenever we allow ourselves to be touched by the Triune God, we grow in love and become holy and whole. The saints are lovers—not because they are able to love so well, but because God has touched them. They pass on the love they have received from God to other people in their own, often original way. Once God takes them home, they also sanctify the Church, because they "spend their heaven" supporting us on our path to holiness.

469 What is prayer?

Prayer is the great gate leading into faith. Someone who prays no longer lives on his own, for himself, and by his own strength. He knows there is a God to whom he can talk. People who pray entrust themselves more and more to God. Even now they seek union with the one whom they will encounter one day face to face. Therefore, the effort to pray daily is part of Christian life. Of course, one cannot learn to pray in the same way one learns a technique. As strange as it sounds, prayer is a gift one obtains through prayer.

God created us as free men and wills our freedom so that we might decide wholeheartedly in favor of the good, indeed for the greatest "good"—in other words, for God. The more we do what is good, the freer we become.

287 But doesn't "freedom" consist of being able to choose evil as well?

We see this in addiction, Here a person sells his freedom to something that appears good to him. In reality he becomes a slave. Man is freest when he is always able to say Yes to the good; when no addiction, no com- pulsion, no habit prevents him from choosing and doing what is right and good. A decision in favor of the good is always a decision leading toward God.

289 Must we allow a person to use his free will, even when he decides in favor of evil?

Freedom would be no freedom at all if it were not the freedom to choose even what is wrong. It would violate the dignity of a man if we did not respect his freedom. One of the central duties of the State is to protect the liberties of all its citizens (freedom of religion, of assembly, and association, freedom of opinion, freedom to choose one's occupation, and so on). The freedom of one citizen is the limit to the freedom of another.

290 How does God help us to be free men?

The more we sin, the more we think only about ourselves and the less well we can develop freely. In sinning we also become more inept at doing good and practicing charity. The Holy Spirit, who has come down into our hearts, gives us a heart that is filled with love for God and mankind. We avail ourselves of the Holy Spirit as the power that leads us to inner freedom, opens our hearts for love, and makes us better instruments for what is good and loving.

291 How can a person tell whether his action is good or bad?

The following guidelines make it easier to distinguish good actions from bad ones, (1) What I do must be good; a good intention alone is not enough. Bank robbery is always bad, even if I commit that crime with the good intention of giving the money to poor people. (2) Even when what I do is truly good, if I perform the good action with a bad intention, it makes the whole action bad. If I walk an elderly woman home and help her around the house, that is good. But if I do it while planning a later break-in, that makes the whole action something bad. (3) The circumstances in which someone acts can diminish his responsibility, but they cannot change at all the good or bad character of an action. Hitting one's mother is always bad, even if the mother has previously shown little love to the child.

34 What should you do once you have come to know God?

After all, to know God means to know that he who created and willed me, who looks at me every moment with love, who blesses and upholds my life, who has the world and the people I love in his hand, who waits longingly for me, who wishes to fulfill and perfect me and to make me dwell forever with him—is there. To nod with your head at this is not enough. Christians must adopt Jesus' way of life.

35 Do we believe in one God or in three Gods?

Christians do not worship three different Gods, but one single Being that is threefold and yet remains one. We know that God is triune from Jesus Christ, He, the Son, speaks about his Father in heaven ("I and the Father are one", Jn 10,30). He prays to him and sends us the Holy Spirit, who is the love of the Father and the Son. That is why we are baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28,19).

36 Can we deduce logically that God is triune?

Men cannot deduce the fact that God is a Trinity by means of their own reason. They acknowledge, however, that this mystery is reasonable when they accept God's revelation in Jesus Christ. If God were alone and solitary, he could not love from all eternity. In the light of Jesus we find already in the Old Testament (for example, Gen 1,2; 18,2; 2 Sam 23,2), indeed, even in all of creation, traces of God's Trinitarian Being.

We revere God as Father first of all because he is the Creator and cares lovingly for his creatures. Jesus, the Son of God, has taught us, furthermore, to regard his Father as our Father and to address him as "our Father". (238-240)

38 Who is the "Holy Spirit"?

When we discover the reality of God in us, we are deal- ing with the working of the Holy Spirit. God sent "the Spirit of his Son into our hearts" (Gal 4,6), so that he might fill us completely. In the Holy Spirit a Christian finds profound joy, inner peace, and freedom. "For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship (in whom) we cry, 'Abba! Father!' " (Rom 8,15b). In the Holy Spirit, whom we receive in Baptism and Confir- mation we are permitted to call God "Father".

39 Is Jesus God? Does he belong to the Trinity?

Jesus was either an imposter who made himself Lord of the Sabbath and allowed himself to be addressed with the divine title "Lord"—or else he was really God. The scandal came when he forgave sins. In the eyes of his contemporaries, that was a crime deserving death. Through signs and miracles, but especially through the Resurrection, his disciples recognized who Jesus is and worshipped him as Lord. That is the faith of the Church.

Lk 15, 1-3.11-32

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." So to them he addressed this parable. Then he said, "A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.

I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."'So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion.

He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.' But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.' He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'"

106 What does freedom mean?

Being free sets man above the animals and in a certain sense even makes him like God. True freedom is not the capacity to choose whatever one wants, good or evil, but rather the capacity to choose the good. Only free human beings can take responsibility. Being personally free makes human beings unique. Within the range of possibilities, someone can freely choose his occupation and his vocation; human beings can come or go, choose this or leave that aside. It is a fundamental human right the exercise of which must not be restricted without good reason. With respect to freedom of expression, human beings must be allowed to articulate freely their own religious, political, and cultural ideas. Everyone must be able to express his own opinion in freedom. For this to hap- pen, there must be a legal order that guarantees a person’s freedom and protects it against pressure from the misuse of freedom by others.

107 Why do we need truth in the life of society?

Truth, translated into my personal life, means truthfulness, honesty. If people do not deal honestly with one another, any society falls apart. When words and actions no longer agree and when we can no longer presume honesty, then mistrust, coldness, and cunning define human coexistence. Another component of truth in the political-economic realm is transparency, both of decisions and of actions. This is especially true when it is a question of the use of financial resources.

109 What sorts of justice are there?

Distributive justice is a relationship of a community to its members. It allots a fair share to each person or group. Legal justice is a relationship of the members to a community. It requires each member of a community to contribute his proper share. Commutative justice is a relationship between equals: someone who sells goods should receive a suitable price for them. It guides the distribution of goods through the world market. Together they make up social justice. Striving for social justice is an important extension of legal justice. While the latter is concerned with obeying the law and a functioning government of laws, social justice brings in the overall social question. The goods of the earth must be apportioned justly. And unjust differences between individuals must be balanced out. Moreover, the dignity of the human person must be respected. Especially in economic matters, persons must not be reduced to their utility and their property. Policies that serve the cause of peace must bring about justice in the comprehensive sense, precisely when it is a question of the just distribution of goods (GS 29). The distribution of goods through the world market must be guided by so-called commutative justice: someone who sells goods should receive a suitable price for them.

110 What is the origin of these values?

All values have their origin in God. Love is not an attribute that God has; “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8). Hence love for others must be the central point of reference for all social activity. If I love, I will be truthful, accept the freedom of other people, and work for justice. Love surpasses justice because I not only give the other person what is due to him but wholeheartedly want to do him good. The fundamental value of “the dignity of the human person” also has its basis in God’s love for us. Because God loves each individual person beyond all measure, he created him in his lovable likeness; thus man possesses an inalienable, inherent dignity.

111 Why is mere justice not enough?

Love is more than justice, for it is “patient” and “kind” (1 Cor 13:4). Mercy must be added to justice in order for society to be truly human. Social justice is not enough for coexistence, much less mere legal justice, since no legislation can generate mutual goodwill among men. Legal justice can only punish offenses against human dignity and help educate to virtue, but social charity releases creative forces for the common good and, thus, for the comprehensive good of all. This includes just structures that allow room for mercy. Nevertheless, justice is something that mercy cannot be: a basic moral requirement. One can only appeal for mercy; justice can be demanded.

473 How are the Psalms important for our prayer?

There are 150 Psalms in the Old Testament. They are a collection of songs and prayers, some of them several thousand years old, which are still prayed today in the Church community—in the so-called Liturgy of the Hours. The Psalms are among the most beautiful texts in world literature and move even modern readers immediately by their spiritual power.

474 How did Jesus learn to pray?

Jesus, who was God and man at the same time, grew up like other Jewish children of his time amid the rituals and prayer formulas of his people, Israel. Nevertheless, as the story of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple demonstrated (Lk 2,41ff.), there was something in him that could not be learned, an original, profound, and unique union with God, his Father in heaven. Like all other men, Jesus hoped for another world, a hereafter, and prayed to God. At the same time, though, he was also part of that hereafter. This occasion already showed that one day people would pray to Jesus, acknowledge him as God, and ask for his grace.

475 How did Jesus pray?

Jesus' life was one single prayer. At decisive moments (his temptation in the desert, his selection of the apostles, his death on the Cross) his prayer was especially intense. Often he withdrew into solitude to pray, especially at night. Being one with the Father in the Holy Spirit—that was the guiding principle of his earthly life.

When face to face with death, Jesus experienced the utmost depths of human fear. Yet he found the strength even in that hour to trust his heavenly Father: "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; remove this chalice from me; yet not what I will, but what you will (be done)" (Mk 14,36). The disciples, who lived in community with Jesus, learned to pray by listening to and imitating Jesus, whose whole life was prayer. Like him, they had to be watchful and strive for purity of heart, to give up everything for the coming of God's kingdom, to forgive their enemies, to trust boldly in God, and to love him above all things. By this example of devotion, Jesus invited his disciples to say to God Almighty, "Abba, dear Father". If we pray in the Spirit of Jesus, especially the Lord's Prayer, we walk in Jesus' shoes and can be sure that we will arrive unfailingly in the heart of the Father.

478 Why can we be confident that our prayer is heard by God?

Even today we know the name of the synagogue official, Jairus was the name of the man who begged Jesus for help, and his prayer was answered. His little daughter was deathly ill. No one could help her. Jesus not only healed his little girl, he even raised her from the dead (Mk 5,21–43). Jesus worked a whole series of well- attested cures. He performed signs and miracles. The lame, the lepers, and the blind did not ask Jesus in vain. There are testimonies also of prayers answered by all the saints of the Church. Many Christians can tell stories of how they called to God and God heard their prayer. God, however, is not an automat. We must leave it up to him how he will answer our petitions.

479 What can we learn from the way in which Mary prayed?

To learn from Mary how to pray means to join in her prayer, "Let it be to me according to your word" (Lk 1,38). Prayer is ultimately self-giving in response to God's love. If we say Yes as Mary did, God has the opportunity to lead his life in our life.

Mt 26, 14-25

Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."'" The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve.

And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me." Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it is not I, Lord?"

He said in reply, "He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born." Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He answered, "You have said so."

Jesus, who knows what hell is like, speaks about it as the "outer darkness" (Mt 8,12). Expressed in our terms, it is cold rather than hot. It is horrible to contemplate a condition of complete rigidity and hopeless isolation from everything that could bring aid, relief, joy, and consolation into one's life.

58 What does it mean to say that man was created "in God's image"?

Man is not a something but rather a someone. Just as we say about God that he is person, so too we say this about man. Man can think beyond his immediate horizon and measure the whole breadth of being; he can even know himself with critical objectivity and work to improve himself; he can perceive others as persons, understand them in their dignity, and love them. Of all the visible creatures, man alone is "able to know and love his creator" (Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et spes (GS) 12, 3). Man is destined to live with him in friendship (Jn 15,15).

Gratitude is love that has been acknowledged. Someone who is grateful turns freely to the giver of the good and enters into a new, deeper relationship with him. God wishes us to acknowledge his love and even now to live our whole life in relation with him. This relationship lasts forever.

Bernard Lonergan's transcendental precepts, also known as transcendental imperatives, are four key guidelines for human activity that are believed to be innate and fundamental to our conscious functioning. They are: Be attentive, Be intelligent, Be reasonable, and Be responsible. These precepts correspond to the four levels of conscious functioning: experience, understanding, judgment, and decision-making, respectively.

Explanation of the Four Precepts:

Be attentive:

This refers to the initial stage of experience, where we are open to the world and its stimuli.

Be intelligent:

This involves understanding and interpreting the experiences we have, seeking to grasp their meaning and implications.

Be reasonable:

This is the stage of judgment, where we evaluate the information gathered and arrive at conclusions.

Be responsible:

This is the final stage, where we act on our judgments and decisions, taking accountability for our choices.

Significance of Lonergan's Transcendental Precepts:

Lonergan's transcendental precepts are not simply guidelines for individual actions but are believed to be essential for personal growth, understanding, and ethical action. They provide a framework for engaging with the world in a way that supports both intellectual and moral development.

For example, in the context of education, applying these precepts can help students learn not only factual information but also how to think critically, make informed judgments, and take responsibility for their learning. Similarly, in interactions with AI, Word on Fire says these precepts can help us to navigate the complexities of AI systems ethically and constructively.

Lonergan's transcendental precepts emphasize the importance of intellectual and moral development, suggesting that a truly authentic life is one that is lived in accordance with these fundamental principles of conscious functioning.

Ecological impact of AI

It should be obvious that in dealing with the infinite, all-powerful God, we are never in control.

This is precisely what we see in the lives of the saints: in Mother Teresa moving into the worst slum in the world in an attitude of trust; in Francis of Assisi just abandoning everything and living for God; in Rose Hawthorne deciding to take cancer sufferers into her own home; in Antony leaving everything behind and going into the desert; in Maximilian Kolbe saying, “I’m a Catholic priest; take me in his place.”

“Is there any better description of sex anywhere in the literature of the world than that provocative line, “The two of them become one flesh”? In a Jewish context, flesh carries the sense of the whole person. Hence sexual union is meant to be a union at all levels.

A husband says to his wife, “My life is no longer about me; it’s about you and the children we will have.” And the wife says the same thing to her husband: “My life is not mine anymore; it belongs to you and our children.”

Some might expect Jesus to have a soft or relativized teaching on divorce, but later in Matthew’s Gospel he firmly declares, “What God has joined together, no human being must separate.” The husband and wife, who become one flesh, are brought together not just by their mutual attraction but by God. Their union is ingredient in God’s purposes. And this is why it cannot be undone. God doesn’t go back on his word. “

”Gen Z journalist Freya India writes, “The sexual revolution destroyed trust and now we better be doubtful, how else can we protect ourselves?” She is “just not persuaded that so many young women object to having families for ideological reasons. We don’t dislike marriage, we doubt it. It will never work, so why try.”

Our culture, argues India, runs on doubt. The “it will never work” message continues to be peddled by companies (advertising on social media) who want to keep the problem alive in order to sell us a solution. What else could keep us hooked on dating apps, dubious “medical” solutions, AI-driven machines with all the answers? But it’s also shared by everyone in this culture who is feeding off the doubt. We not only doubt ourselves: We doubt whether objective morality exists or even whether anything matters at all.
Who Is the Gate of Heaven: Jesus or Mary? Matthew Becklo 28 May 2025

We see a similar dynamic in Christ the Way. Jesus says “I am the Way” (John 14:6). At the same time—and without contradicting that for a second—Mary plays an indispensable role in showing this Way and guiding us on it. Paragraph 2674 of the Catechism says, “Jesus, the only mediator, is the way of our prayer; Mary, his mother and ours, is wholly transparent to him: she ‘shows the way’ (hodigitria), and is herself ‘the Sign’ of the way, according to the traditional iconography of East and West.” The reference there, hodigitria, is to the iconic style of Mary holding the Christ child and pointing to him—an example of which we see in the Our Lady of Czestochowa icon I mentioned earlier. In Greek it means, literally, “she who shows the Way.” Christ is the Way, and Mary shows the Way. Both are true.

For two thousand years, the Church—in all its Marian language and poetry, doctrine and devotion—has been teasing out this dynamic, which Charles Williams called “coinherence.” The Triune God and the Virgin Mary coinhere with each other—through, with, and in Christ. This is the great love story into which we have been caught up as Mary’s children, and Christ’s brothers and sisters.

This is why Mary matters—not because Christ doesn’t matter, but because he does. Her identity, her humanity, her femininity—all of it is given to him, and assumed to the Father with him. And the Church is called to follow her in following him.

The poem uses vivid imagery to depict the intense, almost spiritual connection between a mother and child. The child's face, a "window" of light, is presented as a place of profound intimacy and connection, a "tender dish of listening, hunger". This connection is further emphasized by the image of the child's gaze holding the mother and God together, suggesting a sacred, unbreakable bond.

Here's a breakdown of the key elements:

The "window" and "light":

The child's face, despite being swaddled, is described as a window, a source of light. This suggests vulnerability and openness, but also a clear view into the child's soul.

Intimacy and connection:

The phrases "tender dish of listening, hunger" and the "nuzzling nose and petal mouth" paint a picture of deep physical and emotional intimacy.

The "locked gaze":

The image of the child's gaze holding "God and man together" elevates the connection to a spiritual level, suggesting a profound, almost religious, bond.

"Dizzy distance":

This phrase juxtaposes the immediate closeness with the vastness of the night sky and a single star, highlighting the simultaneous experience of intimacy and the infinite.

"Tumbling softly":

The mother's response to the child's gaze is described as a soft, gentle "tumbling" into the child, further emphasizing the reciprocal nature of their connection.

15 Is man called to love?

Yes, it is profoundly in keeping with human nature to be loved and to offer love. In this, God himself serves as our ideal. Jesus showed us that the very being of God is love. Between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, an eternal exchange of love takes place. A lov- ing human being, too, has a share in this communion of love. Our life can succeed only if we do not shut ourselves off from the stream of divine love but rath- er open our hearts to it. Love causes us to be open to the needs of our neighbor and makes us capable of going beyond ourselves. Jesus Christ, who out of love for mankind freely sacrificed himself on the Cross, accomplished the greatest deed of love precisely by going beyond his own human life.

19 Why is man’s selfishness the core of every human sin?

As long as man looks at himself egotistically, he wastes away. We are made in such a way that we are not enough for ourselves. We need human commu- nity and a liberating orientation toward the meaning and source of our being, ultimately toward God. We must go out of ourselves, because we are created for love. By loving, we go beyond ourselves, toward another person and ultimately toward God. Being turned in on oneself is synonymous with sinning. Someone who does not (or cannot) love is living in self-imposed alienation. This is true also for whole societies. Where production and consumption and prolonging life come first, there will be a lack of solidarity and real humanity.

368 What place does the family have in God's plan of creation?

God himself, in the depths of the Trinity, is communion. In the human sphere, the family is the primordial image of communion. The family is the unique school of living in relationships. Nowhere do children grow up as well as in an intact family, in which they experience heartfelt affection, mutual respect, and responsibility for one another. Finally, faith grows in the family, too; the family is, the Church tells us, a miniature church, a "domestic church", the radiance of which should invite others into this fellowship of faith, charity, and hope.

369 Why are families irreplaceable?

The family is the basic cell of human society. The values and principles that are lived out in the small circle of the family are what make solidarity in the life of larger society possible in the first place.

Children are a gift from God and not the property of the parents. Before they are their parents' children, they are God's children. The primary duty of parents is to present to their children the Good News and to communicate the Christian faith to them.

373 How should a family live its faith together?

Parents stand in for their children with their own faith, have them baptized, and serve as their models of faith. That means that parents should make it possible for their children to experience how valuable and beneficial it is to live in the familiar presence of the loving God. At some time, however, the parents, too, will learn from their children's faith and hear how God speaks through them, because the faith of young people is often accompanied by greater devotion and generosity and "because the Lord often reveals to a younger person what is better" (St. Benedict of Nursia, Rule, chap. 3, 3).

374 Why is God more important than the family?

Children do not belong to the parents, nor do parents belong to their children. Every person belongs directly to God. Only to God is man bound absolutely and always. This is how we understand what Jesus said to those who are called, "He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me" (Mt 10,37). Therefore parents should place their children confidently into God's hands if the Lord calls them to the consecrated life in a religious order or to be a priest.

313 Why should I become involved specifically in the Church?

Outside the Church there are many excellent, worthwhile organizations in which Christians can become involved. Pope Francis challenges the Church not to remain in herself but to go “to the peripheries... to the limits of human existence” and poverty. But this must not lead the Church to overextend herself socially and lose her power to change society, just because many Christians prefer to become involved outside the Church instead of doing so together with their brothers and sisters. The past sins of Catholics and individual bad experiences are no reason to withdraw from the charitable and social works of the Church. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as “the Church”, if that is understood as an organization that consists of (active) officials and (passive) beneficiaries. The Church is a place of God’s presence in the world, a body that consists of all the baptized, a people made up of sinners and saints. We are all “the Church”. Then, too, the Church is always what we make of her as her members. That is why every Catholic must be involved in the Church and for the Church and find his own way of shaping society along with her in the spirit of the Gospel. One Christian is no Christian! Together we are supposed to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

315 What special things do Christians have to offer their fellowmen?

Not special things, but Someone special: Jesus Christ. Christians who fight for a more humane world in the midst of poverty and misery do not necessarily have better social programs or better financial policies; often they do not even have greater idealism in their backpacks. Ultimately they have only one thing to communicate: a God who became man. No philosophy and no other religion knows so much about the Almighty. The God of Jesus Christ knows and understands us in our humanity. Many people today are lonely and feel abandoned in an anonymous society. Not even the Internet with all sorts of social networks can replace personal interaction. There is still a yearning to be accepted personally as we are, with our strengths and weaknesses. Our Christian proclamation says: Every individual is loved quite personally by God, and every individual can encounter this love through a relationship with Jesus Christ. That is a great message, particularly for people who are going through crises and asking themselves questions about the meaning of life and the future.

317 Where do I find the compass for my social involvement ?

No book is more important for Christians than Sacred Scripture. “To read Sacred Scripture”, Saint Francis of Assisi says, “is to take advice from Christ.” Besides Scripture, the Catholic Church lives by sacred Tradition, the living faith of the Church enkindled by the fire of the Holy Spirit. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this faith, which has grown and become deeper over the course of two millennia, has found its contemporary expression. Everything that a Christian should know about the contents and the necessary form of his faith is collected in this volume. Someone who is socially committed and involved finds the central teachings of the Church in the social encyclicals from Pope Leo XIII on. They are concisely summarized in the Compendium of the social Doctrine of the Church. Then there is YOUCAT, to give young people easier access to the Catechism. DOCAT was composed in order to circulate the Church’s social teaching widely among young people.

504 What can a Christian accomplish through meditation?

Meditation can be an important aid to faith that strengthens and matures the human person. Nevertheless, techniques of meditation that promise to bring about an experience of God, or even the soul's union with God, are deceptive. On account of such false promises, many people believe that God has abandoned them just because they do not perceive him. But God cannot be compelled to show up by particular methods. He communicates himself to us whenever and however he wishes.

505 Why is prayer sometimes a struggle?

Often someone who wants to pray must first conquer his lack of will power. Even the Desert Fathers were acquainted with spiritual sluggishness ("acedia"). Reluctance to seek God is a big problem in the spiritual life. The spirit of the times sees no point in praying, and our full calendars leave no room for it. Then there is the battle against the tempter, who will try anything to keep a person from devoting himself to God. If God did not want us to find our way to him in prayer, we would not win the battle.

506 Is prayer not just a sort of conversation with yourself?

Those who are experienced in prayer report that a person very often comes out of a prayer session different from the way he went in. Sometimes expectations are met, you are sad and find consolation; you lack confidence and receive new strength. It can also hap- pen, though, that you would like to forget pressures but are made even more uneasy; that you would like to be left in peace and instead receive an assignment. A real encounter with God—the kind that occurs again and again in prayer—can shatter our preconceptions about both God and prayer.

Prayer does not seek superficial success but rather the will of God and intimacy with him. God's apparent silence is itself an invitation to take a step farther –in total devotion, boundless faith, endless expectation. Anyone who prays must allow God the complete freedom to speak whenever he wants, to grant whatever he wants, and to give himself however he wants. (2735-2737)

508 What happens if you do not feel anything when you pray or even experience reluctance to pray?

Even St. Thérèse of Lisieux for a long time could not sense God's love at all. Shortly before her death she was visited one night by her sister Céline. She noticed that Thérèse's hands were clasped together. "What are you doing? You should try to sleep", Céline said. "I cannot. I am suffering too much. But I am praying", Thérèse replied. "And what do you say to Jesus?" "I do not say anything to him. I love him."

509 Isn't praying a flight from reality?

Prayer is like going to a gas station where we get free fuel for our long journeys and extreme challenges. Praying does not lead out of reality but, rather, deeper into it. Praying does not take time away from other things but, rather, doubles the remaining time and fills it with intrinsic meaning.

510 Is it possible to pray always?

You cannot keep God content with a few words in the morning or evening. Our life must become prayer, and our prayers must become life. Every Christian life story is also a story of prayer, one long attempt to achieve ever greater union with God. Because many Christians experience a heartfelt longing to be with God constantly, they turn to the so-called "Jesus prayer", which has been an age-old custom particularly in the Eastern Churches. The person who prays it tries to integrate a simple formula—the most well-known formula is "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"—into his daily routine in such a way that it becomes a constant prayer.

139 What is the lay vocation?

A lay person is not a second-class Christian, for he shares in the priestly ministry of Christ (the universal priesthood). He sees to it that the people in his walk of life (in school, family and work) come to know the Gospel and learn to love Christ. Through his faith he leaves a mark on society, business, and politics. He supports the life of the Church, for instance, by becoming a lector or an extraordinary minister, by volunteering as a group leader, or by serving on church committees and councils (for example, the parish council or the board of directors of an institution). Young people especially should give serious thought to the question of what place God might want them to have in the Church.

141 What is the Pope's responsibility?

Jesus gave Peter a unique position of preeminence among the apostles. This made him the supreme authority in the early Church. Rome—the local Church that Peter led and the place of his martyrdom— became after his death the internal reference point of the young Church. Every Christian community had to agree with Rome; that was the standard for the true, complete, and unadulterated apostolic faith. To this day every Bishop of Rome has been, like Peter, the supreme shepherd of the Church, whose real Head is Christ. Only in this capacity is the Pope "Christ's Vicar on earth". As the highest pastoral and doctrinal authority, he watches over the transmission of the true faith. If need be, he must revoke commissions to teach doctrine or relieve ordained ministers of their office in cases of serious failures in matters of faith and morals. Unity in matters of faith and morals, which is guaranteed by the Church's Magisterium, or teaching authority, with the Pope at the head, is one reason for the remarkable resilience and influence of the Catholic Church.

144 What is the task of the bishops?

Bishops must first of all be apostles—faithful witnesses of Jesus, who personally called them to follow him and then sent them. So they bring Christ to mankind and mankind to Christ. This happens through their preaching, the celebration of the sacraments, and their governance of the Church. As a successor of the apostles, a bishop exercises his ministry by virtue of his own apostolic authority; he is not an agent or a sort of assistant to the Pope. Yet he acts with and under the Pope.

143 Is the Pope really infallible?

The infallibility of the Pope has nothing to do with his moral integrity or his intelligence. What is infallible is actually the Church, for Jesus promised her the Holy Spirit, who keeps her in the truth and leads her ever deeper into it. When a truth of the faith that has been taken for granted is suddenly denied or misinterpreted, the Church must have one final voice that authoritatively says what is true and what is false. This is the voice of the Pope. As the successor of Peter and the first among the bishops, he has the authority to formulate the disputed truth according to the Church's Tradition of faith in such a way that it is presented to the faithful for all times as something "to be believed with certainty". We say then that the Pope defines a dogma. Therefore such a dogma can never contain something substantially "new". Very rarely is a dogma defined. The last time was in 1950.

145 Why does Jesus want there to be Christians who live their whole lives in poverty, unmarried chastity, and obedience?

In every age individual Christians let themselves be completely taken over by Jesus, so that "for the sake of the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 19,12) they give everything away for God—even such wonderful gifts as their own property, self-determination, and married love. This life according to the evangelical counsels in poverty, chastity, and obedience shows all Christians that the world is not everything. Only an encounter with the divine Bridegroom "face to face" will ultimately make a person happy.

Cultivate interior life and relationship with God in all circumstances

I would like to dwell again on the distinctive feature of a Christian’s professional life. In a word, it means bearing witness to Christ in the world by showing, through your example, that work can be a very positive setting for personal development and not primarily a means of making profit. Your work enables you to participate in the work of creation and to serve your brothers and sisters. Acting in this way, you will be “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world”, as the Lord asks of us. In daily life, put into practice the preferential option for the poor, whatever your position in society, in accordance with the spirit of the Beatitudes (cf.Mt 5:3-12), so as to see in them the face of Jesus who calls you to serve him (cf.Mt 25:31-46).

For the saints are the true stars of our life, those “who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope. Certainly, Jesus Christ is the true light, the sun that has risen above all the shadows of history. But to reach him we also need lights close by — people who shine with his light and so guide us along our way.”

Little Poor Man

The phrase about his brotherhood with the sun and moon, and with the water and the fire, occurs of course in his famous poem called the Canticle of the Creatures or the Canticle of the Sun. He sang it wandering in the meadows in the sunnier season of his The phrase about his brotherhood with the sun and moon, and with the water and the fire, occurs of course in his famous poem called the Canticle of the Creatures or the Canticle of the Sun. He sang it wandering in the meadows in the sunnier season of his own career, when he was pouring upwards into the sky all the passions of a poet. It is a supremely characteristic work, and much of St Francis could be reconstructed from that work alone. Though in some ways the thing is as simple and straightforward as a ballad, there is a delicate instinct of differentiation in it. Notice, for instance, the sense of sex in inanimate things, which goes far beyond the arbitrary genders of a grammar. It was not for nothing that he called fire his brother, fierce and gay and strong, and water his sister, pure and clear and inviolate. Remember that St Francis was neither encumbered nor assisted by all that Greek and Roman polytheism turned into allegory, which has been to European poetry often an inspiration, too often a convention. Anyhow St Francis was, as it were, the founder of a new folk-lore; but he could distinguish his mermaids from his mermen and his witches from his wizards. In short, he had to make his own mythology; but he knew at a glance the goddesses from the gods.

This fanciful instinct for the sexes is not the only example of an imaginative instinct of the kind. There is just the same quaint felicity in the fact that he singles out the sun with a slightly more courtly title besides that of brother; a phrase that one king might use of another, corresponding to “Monsieur notre frère.” It is like a faint half-ironic shadow of the shining primacy that it had held in the pagan heavens. A bishop is said to have complained of a Nonconformist saying Paul instead of Saint Paul; and to have added, “He might at least have called him Mr Paul.” So St Francis is free of all obligation to cry out in praise or terror on the Lord God Apollo, but in his new nursery heavens, he salutes him as Mr Sun. Those are the things in which he has a sort of inspired infancy, only to be paralleled in nursery tales. Something of the same hazy but healthy awe makes the story of Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit refer respectfully to Mr Man.

If the faintest hint has been given here of what St Francis felt about the glory and pageantry of earth and sky, about the heraldic shape and colour and symbolism of birds and beasts and flowers, some notion may be formed of what it meant to him to go blind. Yet the remedy might well have seemed worse than the disease. The remedy, admittedly an uncertain remedy, was to cauterise the eye, and that without any anaesthetic. In other words it was to burn his living eyeballs with a red-hot iron. Many of the tortures of martyrdom, which he envied in martyrology and sought vainly in Syria, can have been no worse. When they took the brand from the furnace, he rose as with an urbane gesture and spoke as to an invisible presence: “Brother Fire, God made you beautiful and strong and useful; I pray you be courteous with me.”

But his first thought was one of his first fancies from the songs of his youth. He remembered the time when a flame was a flower, only the most glorious and gaily coloured of the flowers in the garden of God; and when that shining thing returned to him in the shape of an instrument of torture, he hailed it from afar like an old friend, calling it by the nickname which might most truly be called its Christian name.

Sun and moon metaphor: Christ and St Francis

Now in truth while it has always seemed natural to explain St Francis in the light of Christ, it has not occurred to many people to explain Christ in the light of St Francis. Perhaps the word “light” is not here the proper metaphor; but the same truth is admitted in the accepted metaphor of the mirror. St Francis is the mirror of Christ rather as the moon is the mirror of the sun. The moon is much smaller than the sun, but it is also much nearer to us; and being less vivid it is more visible. Exactly in the same sense St Francis is nearer to us, and being a mere man like ourselves is in that sense more imaginable. Being necessarily less of a mystery, he does not, for us, so much open his mouth in mysteries.

From the sermons of St Augustine

‘If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’ The Lord’s command that if any wishes to follow him he must deny himself, seems hard and difficult. But after all, it is not hard and difficult seeing that it is the command of him who himself aids in the carrying out of what he commands.

For what is said to him in the psalm is true, ‘Because of your command I have followed the hard road.’ True, too, are his own words, ‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ In a word, whatsoever in the precept is hard is made easy by love.

What is the meaning of ‘Let him take up his cross’ ? It means, let him bear whatever is vexatious: on that understanding, let him follow me. For when he begins to follow me in my character and my teaching, he will have many to contradict him, many to forbid him, many to dissuade him — and that takes place actually among those who are the companions of Christ. The people who wished to deter the blind man from calling out were at that time walking with Christ. Whether therefore it is a matter of threats or flatteries or any kinds of prohibitions, if you wish to follow, turn to the cross, endure, bear up, and refuse to surrender.

And so in this world, which is holy, good, reconciled, saved, — or rather in the process of being saved, but at present saved by hope, — ‘for in this hope we were saved’ — in this world, that is the Church which follows Christ in her totality, he has said to all men at once, ‘If any man would come after me, let him deny himself.’

This is not a case where virgins ought to hear the exhortation and married women not, where widows ought to hear and young wives not, where monks ought to hear and married men not, or clerics ought to hear but not the laity, but rather let the universal Church, the universal body, all her members divided and distributed in their several offices, let them all follow Christ.

Let her follow in her unique unity, let her follow as the dove, let her follow as the bride, let her follow, ransomed and endowed by the blood of her spouse. There the innocence of virgins has its place, there the chastity of widows has its place, there the purity of marriage has its place. own way, follow Christ; let them deny themselves, that is, let them not be presumptuous; let them take up their cross, that is, endure in the world for Christ whatever the world has brought on them. Let them love him who alone does not deceive, who alone is not cheated, who alone does not cheat. Let them love him because his promise is true. But because he does not give immediately, faith is shaken. Endure, persevere, bear, put up with delay, and then you have borne the cross.

Let all those members which have their place there, each in their natural kind, each in their own place, each in their

My mother-in-law has a framed printout of a humorous prayer hanging where she will see it each morning. Norma’s prayer reads, “Dear Lord, so far, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I’m really glad about that. But in a few minutes, God, I’m going to get out of bed. And from then on, I’m going to need a lot more help.”

I often think about the simple irony of Norma’s prayer when I pray over the Transfiguration. How easy it is to be all that Jesus asks of us when the day is fresh and we’ve yet to make a mistake. All three synoptic Gospels tell this remarkable story of Jesus being wholly transformed. His closest friends watched as he conversed with their spiritual heroes. Given this foretaste of heaven, Peter spoke from his humanity. I would have done the same. Surely, some part of Peter wanted to stay atop that mountain forever. He, James, and John had witnessed Jesus transfigured, but then they, too, were forever changed.

It’s often easiest for me to “listen to Jesus” in church. Having heard the Word and been fed by the Eucharist, I long to linger quietly in the sanctuary. The silence, sacred art, and lingering taste of Jesus’s presence are tangible there. But like James, John, and Peter, I must come down from the mountain and back into the real world. As Norma’s prayer reminds me, it’s outside of my comfort zone that I must listen most carefully to Jesus.

—Excerpted from Jesus Every Day, Jesus Every Way
by Lisa M.
