Overall, I really liked the book. It is a lot different from the novels we have read in class this year. I like the idea of life from an alternate society and comparing and contrasting the two. It is very interesting to see what would happen in a world with limited human rights and to imagine how I would react in Winston's place.

Throughout the book, Winston struggles with his identity as he can't express himself when he is constantly being watched.

The book teaches us that we are all controlled by basic human nature. We all have basic instincts that take over when we are in certain situations such as being scared. Orwell warns against communism and complete equality as it can dictate human nature such as his example of Newspeak that changes and restricts how we speak. In communism people spy on one another to insure equality which will lead to people not expressing these feelings due to fear for their lives.
