There is no one to catch them, nobody to stop them from falling. This represents that there is a huge struggle in preserving childhood, and we must let the child experience the way of life on their own.

The theme of inability to take action is found all around the book, but I will talk about it in the late chapters when Holden sees "🤬 you" on the wall. He talks about how he wants to beat the 🤬 out of the person who wrote it down, but then he says that he probably wouldn't actually do anything to them if he found them. "I kept picturing myself catching him at it, and how I'd smash his head on the stone steps till he was good and goddam dead and bloody. But I knew, too, I wouldn't have the guts to do it." This is important to the story because it shows that Holden still thinks he is a child and wont do anything, but he is soon an adult.

The final chapters of the book bring out Holden's protective nature, especially when it comes to his family. Holden realizes the effect his actions have on Phoebe, and how because of what he chooses to do, trying to run away from the world, she thinks that doing the same is normal. Holden realizes that by running away, he's exposing Phoebe to a harsh part of life, where people lie about what they say they're going to do and leave when things get difficult. Phoebe even says that she wouldn't do the play she was excited about just so she could run away with Holden. For Holden that seems to be the deal breaker, that is the signal that Phoebe is losing her innocent nature. That she would give up something that she would enjoy just because she sees her brother doing something else.

There is a recurring theme of death in Catcher in the Rye, whether suicide or illness, every death that Holden found significant to talk about was that of children/adolescents. James Castle was a teenager when he committed suicide, and him being wrapped in Holden's jacket connects him to this death of innocence. Holden also is still processing one of the most important losses in the story, his brother Allie who died 3 years ago. Writing a story about Allie's baseball mitt was his way of coming to closure with his death, but Holden never got rid of the idea in his head of these events in his life representing the death of innocent that plagues the adult world.

The red hunting hat as one of the symbols that have been showing up very often represents a kid of alienation as a protection. Going back to all the chapters in the book, each time Holden wants to hide from someone or something he would wear his red hunting hat, it protects him but it is also a kind of disconnection to the world. In another word the hunting hat is Holden's alienation from society and his intentional isolation from people. Some of the examples when Holden is wearing it is when he has a fight with Stradlater. Later he also gave his hat to his sister. I think Holden also thinks that red hunting is protecting innocent children, or childhood.

In chapter 12, Holden ends up at a party where he gets seen by one of his brother's old girlfriends. She is with a Naval officer, and he and Holden don't speak. Lillian dominates the conversation with Holden and she treats him like a child in a way saying, "Are you all alone, baby?" In the end of the conversation though, Holden and the Naval officer exchange pleasantries, again, despite the fact that they didn't speak to each other. This shows some of the phoniness in the world, in how you're expected to act towards people you don't even know and didn't even care to know about.

holden explains that adults are inevitably phonies, and, what’s worse, they can’t see their own phoniness. Phoniness, for Holden, stands as an emblem of everything that’s wrong in the world around him and provides an excuse for him to withdraw into his cynical isolation. Though oversimplified, Holden’s observations are not entirely inaccurate. Holden can be a highly insightful narrator, and he is very aware of superficial behavior in those around him.
