Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday and a day off from school for students. However, to honor his legacy, this is not a day off but a day ON.

It is a day designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. It also serves as a reminder that it is always a perfect day to do something good.

When I was younger and living with my parents, my service to the household would be mainly through household chores.

While it did not seem like much at the time, helping with chores, and also assisting my younger siblings with homework put my parents at ease because it was one less worry for them.

My kind of dream volunteering job would be to clean up at the Harbor. I did this once in 3rd grade and I want to go do it again.

I think I would like to do something with reading to younger kids to help them learn more about Martin Luther King and how he encouraged people to stand up for their rights and peacefully fight for justice. Ari

My service day would be to go to a community church and help translate for people that do not speak English. sometimes when people come to America, they do not understand all the information that is given to them or the mail they get.

By helping them understand what services they can ask for in their native language, they will be more likely to have a good path towards their freedom and equal treatment.

My goal for this year related to service is to be a better listener. I Want to listen to my friends, my teachers, my parents and family more. I want to be more empathic like Dr. King.
