Right in the center of Bogotá lies a place that feels frozen in time, La Candelaria. This historic neighborhood keeps the colonial charm of the city alive, and every corner seems to tell a story. Walking along its cobblestone streets, surrounded by colorful houses, balconies, and street art, is like taking a journey through Bogotá’s past and present. In this blog, I want to share why La Candelaria is one of my favorite places to experience the true essence of the city. The first thing that stands out in La Candelaria is its beautiful colonial architecture. The old houses with wooden doors and bright facades look like they belong to another century. But beyond its beauty, this neighborhood is the cultural heart of Bogotá. It’s home to some of Colombia’s most famous museums, like the Gold Museum, where you can admire ancient gold artifacts; the Botero Museum, filled with the paintings and sculptures of Fernando Botero; and the Colonial Art Museum, which showcases the country’s religious art from centuries ago. There are also places that every visitor should see. The Plaza de Bolívar is the main square and the heart of the city. Around it stand the Cathedral Primada, the Capitolio Nacional, and the Palace of Justice—impressive buildings full of history and meaning. Just a few steps away, you’ll find the Luis Ángel Arango Library, a perfect place for book lovers, and the Teatro Colón, a stunning theater that hosts concerts and plays in a magical setting. And of course, La Candelaria isn’t only about history. The neighborhood is full of cozy cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Colombian food like a warm ajiaco soup or a cup of hot chocolate with almojábana. It’s the perfect spot to sit, relax, and watch the lively rhythm of Bogotá pass by.Visiting La Candelaria is a journey through time, where history and modern life meet in every street. It’s a neighborhood that preserves its colonial soul while staying full of art, music, and youthful energy.
