However this is not the only thing that occurs as the government fuels this and ignores their duty to protect their citizens. Using the imagery of a power struggle between white and black, the perspective of an internally racist white family, and the almost fearful tone throughout this short story, Gordimer is able to create a feeling of imbalance. On page 23 of Jump and Other Stories, the line that most stands out is "YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED" evoking that feeling of "White Power". In "The Beads" Louise Endrich creates a small amount of fear and changes the perspective from white to black, and while it is much more different than "Once Upon a Time" There is still that underlying issue of a difference in power dynamics and government control.
