Pro - they sometimes attract free media attention, drumming up potentially millions of dollars in free PR if they are in the right place with the right concept. Target has done very well with them here in NYC over the years; it has also introduced NYers to Target in a way that a regular store opening would never had done as successfully by creating that sense of urgency to visit before it disappeared. Done properly it should also move enough inventory to pay the expenses involved, so its a win/win for the company in that case.

Con - they sometimes look like half baked concepts that were thrown together by someone trying to get rid of remnants and duds from their regular product line. I had a clothing store pop up across the street from my store this past summer with the strangest, most unflattering clothing for men I have ever seen. I think I saw 10 people walk out of that space with shopping bags in the 8 weeks the store was open. On the plus side for the kids who worked there, they got to spend a significant amount of time cruising online hook up/sex sites while at work uninterrupted (their computer was facing the side street, which I walked past several times per day - it was pretty hard to miss).
