ACRYLIC PAINTING

One of my favourite outcomes from this module, inspired from my collage, I experimented with block painting while adding my own personal touches. I began with a bright red base colour before briefly mapping out striking forms with green and a large flat brush. I initially struggled with the acrylic, but eventually found my own way to control it better, using small amounts of water and differing brushes. I love how i handled the flat brushes to create the square-like shapes shown to create depth and light. I could argue that the painting may look too hectic or busy, but i think that is what i love most about it. It’s full of energy and life, with help of vibrant contrasting colours, I would love to experiment with something like this again and i found the process very enjoyable.

A continuous line drawing based on our still life setup using charcoal. I love how quick and simple continuous line drawings can be, while creating a loose and interesting outcome. I think i captured the still life quite well, especially considering all of our charcoal drawings were timed.

A blind drawing based on our still life using charcoal. Despite being ‘blind’ for this process i still think the outcome is interesting and I think it offers certain opportunities for different projects, for example photocopying this drawing and layering it might be something exciting to experiment with.

A charcoal drawing using my left hand based on our still life. Not one of my favourites, but definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, while also being slightly uncomfortable. Using my non dominant-hand forced me to focus more on capturing form rather than fine details.

For this drawing we moved around to room to other still life setups to change our perspective. We were tasked to draw from memory which proved to be quite challenging. This process required me to use my eyes to study the objects in front of me before putting pen to paper immediately.

Another groups still life, using multiple coloured pencils. I enjoyed this task and it is one if my favourites of the bunch, the coloured pencils layered on top of each other create a lively, dynamic outcome.

DARK INTO LIGHT STUDY

A dark into light study using white chalk against black paper. Using the flat end of the chalk, I focused on form and depth to capture the shape of the shadows and light placed on the objects. I later used the sharper end of the chalk to create more texture. I think i achieved the basis of this task well, and i am pleased with the outcome.

Using various pieces of collage material from my still life images, as-well as newspapers and magazines, I created my very own collage for use in my painting and printmaking. I wanted to create something dynamic and colourful, while also having some contrasting objects such as the skull and plastic water bottles. I was drawn to more circular forms; the eye-holes, coin, and pomegranate ornament, and also various textures including the smooth surface of the vase paired with the pattern in the top right and fabrics shown throughout.

My first print, using a pencil on the opposite side I briefly sketched out my still life collage. I think that the image it created is interesting, however, too much ink for my personal liking.

My second print, I loved the harsh texture that the pencil had created previously, so this time i leaned harder on the pencil while mapping out my sketch. I personally enjoy how ‘messy’ printmaking can appear.

Definitely my favourite of the bunch, I put more detail into my drawing to create a more clear cohesive image. Again, I love the texture the pencil allowed me to create, and the overall inking process i found quite fun and freeing. I unintentionally ended up taking a continuous line approach in certain parts of the image, which i enjoyed, as it creates a sort of looseness.

Attempting to work light in to dark using tissue to wipe away excess ink. I like this print, i enjoy how vague the images are and how they layer upon each other. However, i think i could have used slightly more ink in particular areas.

My least favourite of the bunch. Attempting to experiment with light in to dark again, but previous pencil lines from other prints worked against my favour. The texture is interesting, but overall it is hard to make out what the image actually is. At least i know now to roll more ink on the board to even out previous pencil lines.

Experimenting with blue ink painting directly onto the surface with a paintbrush. I like this outcome and the sort of ‘swirling’ effect the paintbrush allowed me to create. I only wish i bad spent more time on this one, but for the most part, i am happy with out it came out, especially with how they blue works against the white.

I began by twisting metal wire around a pencil to create a sort of tangled image, before intertwining thread and beads to sit loosely upon the wire. As my jewellery piece was supposed to relate back to my identity, I think that i achieved this quite well. For me, the wire is harsh and jagged, but the thread and beads add a sort of softness to the piece.

REWORKED SCHOOL SHIRT

My school is a place where I was restricted to a strict uniform, preventing individuality and how I could express myself as a person. For my reworked shirt, I wanted to reflect the conflict between creativity and conformity. My initial intention was never to create something visually appealing, but rather chaotic and disruptive. I used techniques such as sewing, embroidery, crochet, pleating, and staining fabric, some of which I had experimented with in my samples. My vision came to life, and I am more than content with my piece. If i were to work into it more, I would add more patches, especially around the back, and I would have liked to experiment more with staining and dyeing fabrics on large scale pieces.

I used the wired net of orange packaging and the end of a pencil to create interesting texture. Throughout all my tile samples texture was my main concern, this tile may be one of my favourites of the bunch. The left hand side slowly disfigures into this more grotesque image, perhaps reflecting rot or decay.

I used a discarded bottle cap to carve out pieces of clay to create a sort of lined texture. I think that I could have done more with this tile, however the texture it created was quite interesting.

I wanted to experiment more with dimension, so I curved this tile after adding slight texture with my fingers. It reminds me of a wooden log of sorts, I think it would have been interesting if I had multiple curved tiles, interlocking with each other similar to a chain.

A texture i created with my fingers, I am in love with the smooth effect my fingers had allowed me to create. The tile has this sort of dramatic feel to it. I later ended up incorporating this technique into my large slab.

I carved small holes into this tile using the end of my pencil. For me, the texture is very organic appearing, I think it would have been interesting to create a texture similar like this again, maybe on something more 3-dimensional.

I smoothed out individual pieces of clay using my finger to create this texture, it reminds me of something similar to whipped cream. I really enjoyed working with clay, and perhaps it would be something i would consider in the future.

I created a variety of small-scale paper structures, focusing on form and how light and shadows may reflect against certain angles and surfaces.

LARGE PAPER DESIGN

For my large-scale paper design, I was drawn to the concept of entanglement and how paper can bend to create a sort of warped image. Based slightly on one of my previous designs, I wanted to experiment specifically with shadows rather than light. The inside is a labyrinth of paper, all intertwining and tangled with each other, creating interesting shadows and form.

I photographed a variety of my clothing in different ways using my chosen colour palette of pinks, browns, greens, and yellows. I then manipulated these photographs using editing apps such as Procreate and Picsart to create a distorted and warped image. These photographs would later inspire my smaller textile samples.

Initially my mood board was headed into a different direction, focusing on Irish identity and culture. I carefully carved a piece of sponge to create the shape of a claddagh band. I love the result, and I wish that I could have included it somewhere else in my work, but it simply didn't feel as relevant anymore.

I used coffee to stain this dye of satin where i had let it soak for several hours. The colour it produced fit right in with my palette and i was more than pleased with the result. I later used coffee on my shirt though the effect differed slightly because of the differing fabrics.

My second personal attempt at animation involved attempting to bounce a ball. I think I did quite well but more frames may have helped me showcase the bounce, instead I think that the ball looks like its floating.

For this task we were sharing one computer between the three of us, therefore it was quite difficult to get a hold of animation. However we all still experimented with moving balls towards the end of the screen. I found animation quite hard and it wasn't my favourite.

Overall, I really enjoyed using Figma to create these compositions. Initially, I found it quite challenging and difficult, but as i progressed I found myself more comfortable with the software. I changed my colour palette midway through to something more easy on the eyes, which I think was a good decision. Each composition side by side creates a cohesive image, full of dimension, form and colour. If i had to choose a favourite I would choose the “Fold” composition, it was slightly tricky at first but I love how the outcome looks

We were tasked with sketching one position for five minutes before the model was rotated and we were to draw over our initial sketch. The first time I did this I found it quite difficult and realised that I should have scaled up, which I attempted in my second one. I found it slightly difficult to follow my lines as they began to overlap one another, though I am aware i can be quite heavy-handed with charcoal.

We drew out a small-scale sketch of what our board game was going to look like. Most of the concepts stayed the same, with the outcome not straying too far from the original.

Our board game, "Raccoon Raid" the goal of the game being to collect all of the rubbish from the bin for the players raccoon. We all had an equal part with designing our boardgame, I wrote out the rules and designed the small raccoon players. We wanted to create a fun, engaging game, maybe directed towards a younger audience. After playing our game we realised that the start/finish square was a bit pointless, however, we were all proud and happy with the outcome.

My monogram ideas based on my initials, I experimented with a variety of fonts before deciding on merging two I liked. I added a slight tone of humour by including the @ symbol, as my initials are A.T, which I thought was quite clever. My favourite of the bunch was the bottom left, where I experimented with a sort of Celtic-inspired font.

I combined my two favourite sketches to create my final idea which I would then use to carve into my lino. The final idea takes qualities from both the @ symbol as-well as the Celtic font. I simply merged the two until I came up with something I liked.

I found the carving process tedious and at times challenging, there were moments I carved too deep which created holes. I wish I didn't carve as much from the background looking back, however, I am still pleased with how my prints came about. Carving into the background, whether accidental or not, allowed me to play with the negative space behind my initials.

I really enjoyed the printing process though I found it quite time-consuming at times, I enjoyed mixing he inks to create colours that weren't immediately available to me, and experimenting with ombre effects in a few. I would definitely print again.

For my Illustration task I chose the miniature figure of a bear. I really enjoyed Illustration though I found it difficult at some points to follow along a given theme, in this case the word i chose was “Mystery” if given more time, I would have loved to return to illustration and continued on. I found illustration to be really freeing and allowed a slightly humorous approach, I would really love to experiment with it again in the future.
