In reference for the development of our
learning plan, I read an interesting article looking at Bloom's action verbs see below, the authors identified inconsistencies in the lists of verbs in the hierarchy of steps (Knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis synthesis and evaluation) and the overlap of classifications. They also highlighted a major criticism that it doesn't align to current evidence about how and why people learn. " to classify learning outcomes should now be based on the science of learning, rather than the other way round. This could eventually lead to a revised, third version of the taxonomy that is grounded in an evidence-based understanding of how we learn."
If you are interested, the link is below - however useful to see the outcome of their study and the list of verbs to use and those to avoid:

Princeton Architectural Type, NY NY 2004; p.10-11, 69.

So, programs are really great to create but its like a mansion made of cardboard if your structure isn't correct or doesn't lead the reader through the message. When studying layout for graphic design the uni project would often include drawing a random design of shapes, lines and blocks on a piece of A4 and then fitting the content to a grid system you develop. Below are a few examples of professionals at work.
The last image shows the overlap in action. How does your overarching message and layout correlate? Just as in medicine.....you need to be able to validate why certain treatments are given, art is no different although often kept more secretive because this is the success behind every great work of art, a perfect layout.

For one of our intern education sessions I provided an infographic as a handout after the session, as a future reference - see link. On reflection probably too wordy, however I sent a survey to our intern #meded focus group to get some feedback about the delivery of our sessions and the utilisation of inforgraphics. This is a response from one of our interns:

Infographics are helpful because they force the developer to include only high yield and relevant information in a succinct format. The efficacy depends on the content itself – can serve as a good memory aid if it was (e.g.) a pie chart showing common DDX however when running through history/exam points and picture of a stethoscope or clipboard is a waste of space (e.g. a mnemonic or acronym would be better). However, I still like the infographics because they give you what you need. '

To further elaborate on question 1, how does the technology help learners:
an infograhic can be used in Gagnes first event, ie gaining attention: it instantly capture's the learners attention and allows learners to derive individual relevance. Plus resonance, a well designed infographic can have impact on comprehension and understanding - which correlates with increased knowledge retention. This is an interesting article looking at infographics to support online learning. It links to the principles of multimedia learning and reducing cognitive load that we covered in the pre course reading tasks, and the research study (using infographics as course summaries in a MOOC) looking at retention, comprehension and appeal for learners, plus downloading for future reference.

And for teachers, creating the summary infographic helps them reflect on their own content delivery by having to represent it in a succinct visual manner - which may then improve their teaching practice.

The video above is presented to learners during the step 2 described below - however with the changes to padlet I can't place the video at that step ??

Step 1. Learners are introduced and made aware of the major concepts (pre training).

There are three major areas of the brain that allow us to understand oral speech:

i). Auditory cortex - which processes the incoming sounds (pitch and volume), both sides of the brain contain this region. So you can actually 'hear' both inputs at the same time.

ii). Broca/Wernicke network - This network processes and makes sense of the spoken word - however it only exists on one side of the brain. Oral speech is therefore funneled into a singular brain network. So if there are simultaneous oral inputs it leads to a 'bottleneck'.

iii). Left inferior frontal gyrus - This region controls the 'bottleneck'. So when we are trying to understand two oral inputs this region blocks one while the other is allowed to pass through and is decoded for understanding.

Step 2. Gain attention and present stimulus
Statement to stimulate and hook attention
Science shows people can't read and listen at the same time

(Deep within your head there is a voice reading aloud each word as your eyes pass over it - that voice is your own.)
Activity follows to present the information: reading a passage to recognise the voice in the head, this is followed by the diagram (video) explaining the concepts

...Note: if audio is added learning will be more effective (modality principle - humans learn best from visuals and spoken words)

Video here

Step 3. Learners are then provided with the flashcards to recall/retrieve the concepts - this could also be 'spaced out' and or tested the following week, in order for learners to recall from memory (retrieval practice)

Hearing speech and text Flashcards | Quizlet
Kate

This is a software, similar to anki, but utilises the process of incremental reading. It is helpful when you are reading a lot of articles, to highlight the areas you want to learn about, then make notes(getting the main ideas and putting them in your own words (elaboration) and then settining up tasks to create flashcards that are reintroduced over time. It will even bring back the article to revisit if you didnt finish it at the time. I started using it last year - but over time I got busy and stopped using it. So its good to revisit now and see how to utilise with students. (kate)
Here is the link to a blog by Ollie Lovell who discusses it in more detail: https://www.ollielovell.com/ollielearns/spaced-repetition-incremental-reading-anki-dendro/
