Genital herpes is caused by the transmission of the simplex herpes II virus. Often, doctors will diagnosis and begin treatment based of the appearance of lesions and sores. Tests to confirm the diagnosis include the growing of the viruses in a culture, the use of antibodies, the use of a blood test to confirm immune response and polymerase chain reactions to prove the genetic material. Doctors send swabs of the viruses to the laboratory so the lab can run tests. These test take a few days to complete.

Treatment using medication can only shorten the time of infection and lower the chance of the reoccurrence. Some medication can also reduce the risk of transmission to a susceptible partner. Most medications should be used seven to ten days from infection to work effectively. Pain suppressing medications should also be used to reduce irritation.

Self-care methods are also recommended to a certain extent. when infected, you should avoid heat and sunlight because it aggravates the irritation. Loose, comfortable, cotton clothing is highly recommended.
