I learned how Rex has many mental issues and is probably the most depressed after losing his child and it shows how much it affected him becoming an alcoholic.

This quote stood out to me as it was a lesson, it showed that no matter the moment everything can get worse.

A personal experience that I have is with some like Billy, I knew a kid in elementary school and he pulled out a knife in the middle of class. He had to wear a clear backpack ever since. It affect the way I see Billy in the story.

Jeanette was speaking to herself as they stopped in the middle of the desert to sleep under the stars, " We were always doing the skedaddle, usually in the middle of the night" (Walls , page 19) This was Jeanette talking how they didn't have stable housing and where always on the move to avoid paying their debts or financial issues.

They move to various locations to keep on trying to find jobs and ways to make money. The kids wear the same clothes multiple times, although their clothing is dirty and torn. I feel like a younger audience would be naive to the financial situation the Walls family is in nor understand how horrible Rex and Rosemary are as parents. An example is when Rex cheated on Rosemary, while an older audience would easily see the issues with the family.

Economic conditions determined the characters entire future, the Walls family were homeless or lived in a run down house, they couldn't further their education due to financial struggles and the lack of a stable source of food. Their economic condition also lead to the kids being bullied by others.

I can relate to Jeanette as I too hated someone, my biological father who was a drug addict. My mother left my father when I was still an infant, I grew up without him and till later years did he wanna have communication and get involved in my life. But my mother told me to not hate him and to see what he really wants from me.

Lori after being driven crazy by Rex and Rosemary finally decided to kick them out of her apartment, Rosemary than responded by saying, "Sometimes you need a little crisis to get your adrenaline flowing and help you realize your potential" ( Walls, page 254). Her mother insisted that she'd be fine without Lori's help to get back on her feet and find somewhere to live. Even stating that Lori was doing the right thing.

What forces are motivating the characters?

The force of living a decent life and having a non-abuse life motivate the characters. In the book, Jeanette experiences the abuse of an absent, alcoholic father, Rex who would spend all their money on alcohol. Her mother, Rosemary leaves them as she moves to California for a better life leaving her children behind fending for themselves. Jeanette would do side jobs to help the family to improve their living conditions and to buy food.

The only way I can relate is the struggle to have a decent life, when I was younger my mother struggled to be a single mother with 2 kids but eventually with the help of my grandpa our lives improved, getting our own apartment. But when my mother struggled we lived in a rather small apartment, my mother would sell things to make money and saved till my grandpa helped her out moving us into a larger apartment.

The narrative exhorts readers to see past appearances and recognize the goodness in others, as Jeannette did with her parents.
