Identity, popular culture, and schooling are intertwined with one another. Popular culture and schooling can impact a persons identity in meaningful ways throughout an individuals lifetime. In Marcus Lyon's TED Talk he addresses the question of: is identity given or created? In this talk he identifies that Identity is a journey. This journey includes both what happens in popular culture and in ones schooling experience. People ultimately find identity in their journey. This journey includes such factors as popular culture and schooling. As noted in Danesi's (2012) article, "Popular Culture:Introductory Perspectives", individuals are being influenced by social media and other popular internet outlets on a daily basis. Identifying the theories that may be at play in the background of these messages can go a long way in identifying why we believe certain things abut ourselves or others (identity). Schooling effects identity in much the same way. Labaree puts forth three purposes for education in his article, "The American Struggle over Educational Goals". If an individual can identify which of the three purposes (democratic equality, social efficiency, and social mobility) most impacted their schooling they can likely also identify something of great importance to how they view themselves and their associated identity.

It is my premise that viewing these three ideals with identity as the overarching umbrella that binds them all together is the best and most accurate way to process the information. That said, popular culture and schooling play a role in impacting one another in a very poignant way. In his book, Between The World and Me, Coates evaluates his schooling experience and shows the reader how the popular culture of repressing the black man have a grave effect on both his schooling and his current identity. The popular culture of the day will always effect the schooling of students either by way of the teachers teaching, peer influences, or the subjects being taught. It would be remiss to view identity, popular culture, or schooling as singular ideas. The truth is the complexity of these three categories are only shown when looked at and critiqued together.
