Yesterday, we talked about multiple aspecs of the novel “Cane warrior”. We talked about our feelings on the first 8 chapters, then we talked about Hamaya and how she felt. We said that she should come with the rest. The fredom is clearly not present and the sence of injustice catches the readers.

I believe it was interesting to see a big part played by fear. Fear was portrayed as an invisible shackle chained onto the slaves. Another side to fear is how their main target was to kill their masters, who fueled their fear, this had made the slave believe that destroying the fear was the only way to break out of the enslaved lives.

After talking a lot about this book, we came to find significance to so many more things than I would think. One topic I hadn’t thought much about is them bringing awareness to sexual assault. I was so busy reading the slavery, working part of it that I didn’t stop to think much of that. It is so sad and nasty. One topic I’m quite passionate about is how good the descriptions this book has are. I think these small details make up a whole different story. There is no sugar coating anything, it makes the person vision how brutal everything really was. Another thing that was mentioned that I quite like about this story is how straight forward each chapter and chapter title is. The name of the chapter is always whatever it is going to be about, and then it only focuses on that.

As we talked about it yesterday, I feel like if I was in Moa’s place, I don’t think I would’ve supported all the stress he had from everything that was happening. He had to carry the fear of being whipped if he did anything wrong whatsoever, he also had to carry the fear of seeing his friends and family die in front of him, and most importantly, he had to carry the fear of possibly dying himself.

I thought one of the most interesting things we talked about yesterday was about moa and Hamaya, because Hamaya still is and was very important to moa and It wasn’t easy for him to leave without her because moa and his family was like Hamayas new family and moa was like a big brother to her.

I think that the story represents really well slavery back in the days but there are a few things that I think slaves wouldn’t have the right to do, for example, to speak or justify themselves like Louis and Papa did.

I think cane warriors is very realistic in the sense that there is a plot but its not overly dramatic and down to earth. The story is realistic and somewhat relatable as well as the fact that moa is the cactus same age as me. I thought that moa and keverton having to do the killing was interesting as moa is young and there are stronger men than him. I also was interested in the sene where Louis was strangling his father and he was put into a predicament, save his father or watch him be strangled.

homeworkIf I was Moa, I would probably be very exhausted a most likely very stressed just because I wouldn’t know how my family back at the plantations are doing and if they are doing okay. I would probably also be very disturbed because he already saw so many dead people and has already gone through such hard things also, I think that I would still be in a shock from killing somebody, but also at the same time I would be kind of relieved because I would finally be free.

I would also feel exhausted from all the work, the punishments, the choices(staying or leaving)and the consequences. But at the same time I would feel happy for thinking of a better life for myself, and I would also feel the duty to give honor to my family by making them proud of me by escaping.
-Eugênia
