I created my own videos which took the students through the course content as I would have done in class. Making your own videos, especially with math, is so important so that you can help the students avoid the common mistakes we as seasoned teachers know they make from year to year.
As an assessment to evaluate their learning the students had a Mathspace or castle learning to complete or an assignment they had to post in Canvas. With the assignments posted in canvas I was able to see the common mistakes and address them when we met in Webex.
Kim Stopanio

This group then had to identify main ideas, interesting tidbits, person to remember and a word to remember. This allowed for students to research a topic they were interested in, support each others reading, increase their understanding of a topic and develop their vocabulary. Each student then presented their topics to their class. I included one of the poster created. Students had an option on how to present this information.

Essentially I flipped my classroom for remote learning. I would have students watch an edPuzzle video with embedded questions that I had created myself to get an understanding of which parts of the lesson they did well on and which parts they struggled with. Next, students would practice their skills on MathSpace which provides incredible feedback. We would then meet every other day on WebEx to review what was taught. As a class we would complete practice problems and students would interact with one another to share their questions, answers and thoughts. This structure allowed the students to do the learning component independently at their own pace, but still provided a face-to-face aspect where they felt comfortable to ask questions for further clarification and complete extra practice problems with me.
-Michelle Wenz

Oral histories choice Mr Luskoff
Oral Histories — A Project Approach to Social Studies

Oral history involves you in thinking about and understanding history and the contemporary world and allows you to bring the cultural and historical experiences of your families directly into the learning process. For our last assignment you are to interview a family member and complete a family history that help you pinpoint where your family’s story has intersected with broader historical events.

I recommend that you organize their interview around a theme. The person(s) you interview might be a veteran, an immigrant, or an activist. Older people, of course, have longer histories to discuss. Interviewees can be a relative, neighbor, or family friends. Parents or other caregivers are always a possibility.

The class can work together to develop the interview questions in our web ex. I recommend starting with biographical questions and proceeding in chronological order. Students can research major historical events and ask the interviewee about the events. Questions like where were you; what did you experience; what do you think about the event now? It will be interesting to learn what the interviewees think about the world today.

An interview can have a layered approach.

Layer 1: Personal Events. Year(s) he or she was born; attended or graduated from high school or college, married, had children, worked.

Layer 2: Technology and Innovation. Year recent inventions came on the market or the person first acquired one.

Layer 3: Local Events. Major local events that shaped the town, county, or state and impacted on their life.

Layer 4. National Events. Major national events that shaped the country and impacted on their life.

Layer 5. World Events. Major international events that shaped the country and impacted on their life.

Open-ended interviews use prepared questions as starting points to encourage people to tell stories about their past. Sometimes during an interview, students ask all of their prepared questions, sometimes only part of their questions, and sometimes they think of new follow-up questions in the middle of the interview.

Sample questions for an immigration theme can include:

Where were you born?

How old were you when you can to the United States?

Who did you travel with?

Who greeted you when you arrived?

Why did you come to the United States?

What did you expect to find?

What did you find?

How do you feel about immigration today?

How do you feel about efforts to change immigration laws?

When my professor at Hoftsra was a student, he interviewed his grandfather. My professor was mostly interested in life during the Great Depression. One of the first questions he asked him was where was he born? His response caught me by surprise. He said, “It depends.” I said Zayde (Yiddish for Grandfather), “What do you mean ‘it depends’?” He said, “It depends on where the border was. Sometimes we were in Austria, sometimes we were in Poland, sometimes we were in Russia.” I also learned that my paternal grandparents had two older children who died from influenza in Europe before World War I, something no one else in my family knew about.

You should take notes and audio- or videotape the interview. When the interview is completed, a student should write up the person’s story either in first or third person. With permission of the interviewee, students can share the tape and their reports. Sometimes interviews are conducted in languages other than English and a student will need to translate the story to share with others.

Outcomes:

You have many options to complete this project:

1) a couple of pages write up of the intereview

2) a keynote- slide show of the write up that includes personal pictures and historic pictures

3) a video of the interview with you summary at the end

4) be creative...any medium you want to get the story across.

The Geometry team will be working to create learning pathways for our first unit of study which focuses on vocabulary and constructions. We will be looking into finding ways for students to read up on the definitions independently at their own pace, watch edpuzzles on how to create constructions with a compass, provide students with real world example videos where students can see angle bisectors and perpendicular constructions happening in the construction field and finding apps where students will be able to screen record themselves creating these constructions. If we have the opportunity for face-to-face instruction in September, students can then use class time to ask questions and practice their vocabulary and constructions.
-Michelle Wenz, Laura Grassie, Bette Sloane, Brian Haber, Liz Gerner, Karen Gutierrez

The Geometry team created a fun circles project where the students got to illustrate any picture they wanted that involved circles. They wrote the equations of their circles as an alternate assessment to a test. The beautiful thing about Geometry is how visual it is and the assignment tapped into the visual potential of circles by giving students an art project instead of a math test. Students were tasked with creating a graphic representation of anything they chose, using circles as their one compositional requirement. Students were assessed by their understanding of equations of circles on the coordinate graph and they were bound only by their own imagination and creativity!
-Laura Grassie, Brian Haber, Karen Gutierrez, and Bette Sloane

SmartMusic is a web-based program that allows our music students to access thousands of solo and ensemble pieces and play or sing along with the provided accompaniments. The program allows students to enhance their sight-reading and note-reading skills and teachers can easily monitor students’ individual progress. SmartMusic allowed me to differentiate my instruction well and provide each student of mine with specific and meaningful feedback. For non-music teachers, I encourage you to create a free account (it is free until June 30th) and explore the vast amount of songs and exercises that are available. https://www.smartmusic.com/
There are many opportunities for interdisciplinary lessons that I’d love to explore more with our staff. -Marc Ratner

Students were to find a parabola in the real world and take a selfie with it. Then students uploaded their picture to Desmos, determined the equation, and found the characteristics of their parabola. This was a great new way to assess student understanding in lieu of a written test. Here is one of my favorite picture submissions!

-Liz Gerner

During the Web-Ex, students who engaged in our group conversation received credit for this particular assignment in Canvas without needing to submit a tangible product. Students who didn't join Web-Ex, or did not contribute verbally or via the chat feature, were asked to share their opinion after the Web-Ex ended by submitting a physical response in Canvas. It was nice to have a conversation with students again and it rewarded those who were active during our Web-Ex. - John Fretz

I found that creating animated/interactive powerpoints for my RISE students was helpful in keeping them engaged in live WebEx sessions. I also found that students and parents appreciated the flexibility of using FlipGrid so they could watch and respond to challenges/daily questions on their own time. I also created YouTube videos that my RISE students could watch on various daily living topics (e.g. How I do: laundry, baking, cleaning, etc.) since I know watching YouTube tutorials is already something most of them enjoy doing.
Removing the pressure of an impending regents exam also allowed me to become more creative in the way I addressed some of my students' speech/language goals. For example, addressing the goal of "summarizing and providing relevant details" by having a student create her own makeup tutorial. She was so much more engaged because the context we were using to address her language goals were relevant to her life and her interests.

I found that flexibility was key as we both adjusted to remote learning, It was important to me to use Remind to message my students and classes for regular check in's and gentle reminders. Students found the Announcements in Canvas too hidden for them to see easily. I was flexible in my scheduling of classes, as students had a choice which class day to attend (I only taught 3 sections of Earth science). I needed to hold an extra help session after each Webex class in order to address students who would not speak up in a large group setting and I encouraged students to use chat if they don't want to speak. Assignment deadlines needed to be flexible so I was able to post the assignments Sunday night and had the due date of Friday afternoon. Each week's assignment was varied including video, interactive activities and pear decks. It was best to include all instructions, EdPuzzle video's and questions all in one place such as a Pear Deck or Google Slide. I assessed in a variety of ways such as castlelearning.com, Kahoot, Quizizz or GimKit. I needed to be flexible in reaching students where they were. I needed to offer extra help and extra credit opportunities that included coloring or practicing meditation/yoga if they chose. Many students expressed happiness of the varied assignments. I needed to be flexible as some of my students did contract CoVid19 and needed to be excused from some of the assignments. As I worked on the lessons for the rest of the year, I asked myself, "What does a person need to know about the physical world?"
-Rosemarie Misciagno

A variety of choice and option for students was always successful during remote learning for me. Students could have choice activities and projects where they could research an individual or a civilization of their choosing. Students were more engaged with the learning that way. Even giving them choice in whether they wanted to complete a reading activity or a video activity depending on the type of learner they were allowed for a higher completion rate. I also thought pear deck was a useful tool in that I could lecture but have students still engaged and answering questions, or have students complete a student paced pear deck. I think clear and explicit directions and expectations definitely help.

The goal of this unit will be to guide students to create, personalize, and explore a variety of activities that focus on our physical fitness levels. Students will experiment with different types of workouts that interest them. Exercise may include no equipment, limited equipment, or items found in the household. I want students to be creative with their exercises and specific to muscle groups. Developing a personalized fitness plan will provide students the knowledge to use this in the future without assistance from a personal trainer. It is my hope for students to find at least one or more types of physical activities they enjoy to carry out after high school
. -Erin Garabedian

I found the most success during this time by providing choice to my students in physical education class. Students were asked to complete weekly fitness logs and submit them through canvas. However, I began to offer a variety of choices in place of the fitness log during the week. Students were offered the option of completing a challenge such as the "See 10, Do 10 Challenge" , filling out a google form following use of the physical education app "Mineola....GO!!", or submitting a video of your physical activities for the week. Each week on canvas students would be provided with a variety of resources, free apps, and free exercise routines to try such as beach body on demand. Many programs were offering free classes due to the pandemic. I believe offering a variety of options increased student engagement.
-Erin Garabedian

They were able to revisit these videos any time they wanted to review the content. The screencasts are great because they are my presentations with my voice explaining things in the same terms that I would use in class. The edpuzzles are great because the embedded questions require that students are paying attention as they watch the video. Student feedback was positive for both of these practices. Moving forward, I would like to try combining the two and making edpuzzles out of my screencasted videos.
Heather Adamski

Just having a simple rhythm and routine for my week gave me a sense of normalcy during this unpredictable time, and my students seemed to get into more of a groove when they knew what to expect and when.
-Jessica Anderson

Something that worked well during Remote Learning was taking our "Thought's Collection- Writer's Notebook" and digitalizing it through GoogleSlides and/or GoogleDocs. Students were given the choice of prompts that correlated with our anchor text and were then required to put their personal voice within their writing. During mini lessons, we focused on grammar and mechanics while transforming cliche words into more academic words. Students then wrote to demonstrate their voice but furthermore than went back into their writing to refine their word choices and/or mechanics by using the highlighting feature in GoogleDocs/Slides. Each week, students would then submit their URL link into Canvas to be graded. This allowed students to balance the anchor texts in English Languages Arts (and the curriculum) with writing personally which is something we do not always encourage our students to do. :) -Katelyn Bucchio

While this split my instruction/discussion over two days, it allowed me to 'see' and acknowledge every student for their work, progress and contribution. It made the discussions personal and individualized. The groups, ironically, were formed pre-Covid, so there was a group rapport and comfort level that made the transition seamless. -Mike Furey

While a thrill and highlight of any English teacher's day, week, year and career, teaching Shakespeare presents many challenges. Be it the bias towards and inaccessibility of his language or the perceived lack of modern-day relevance, students have an aversion to Shakespeare. Trying to teach Hamlet remotely during a pandemic made it even more difficult, so necessary adjustments were made to personalize the experience for my students while exposing them to the beauty, relevance and importance of Shakespeare. For the final assignment (after having mastered basic plot-points, characters and themes via The Lion King and also having modeled and directed more straight-forward ELA tasks with Hamlet's early soliloquies), students were asked to create their own version of the 'to be or not to be' soliloquy, but we added a few things: students could use any medium (video, audio, poetry, film, art, painting, sculpture, cooking, etc.) to reflect their inner turmoil; students could lean on Hamlet's themes, but had connect them to their quarantine experience of feeling isolated, trapped, confused, betrayed, forgotten, angry and depressed (like Hamlet); students had to focus on key words from the Common Application College Essay Prompt (as this was or could be a precursor to their college essay). The results were incredible. While some students opted for a more traditional writing piece with titles such as "Finding Purpose", "Dark Yet Darker", "Quarantine", "To Win Wars", and "Boredom", others got a bit more creative and are extraordinary. Work submitted by Arash Lahijani, Anthony Letta, Maya Simbulan, James Santaniello and Teresa James was beyond what I could have expected.
-Mike Furey

The theatre students wrote monologues based on characters they developed themselves. Each student wrote a monologue that was so creative and relatable. This was an outlet for them to open up about how they are feeling during these times, or allowed them to find humor in this situation. Here is a funny example of one of the students monologues.

What’s For Dinner?

A Monologue from Stranded

A mini summary: Josephine Russo is fed up with her family and their poor dinner options. Why

do they always want chicken for dinner? Dive deep into Josephine’s story as she reminisces on

how her passion for cooking came to be and why she cannot bear to eat another piece of

chicken.

I’m basically the Theresa Giudice of Essex County. EVERYBODY knows my name.

When you hear “Josephine Russo” around here, you imagine a movie star. To be honest, who

doesn’t want to be me? I know all the hot gossip–I know every mother’s in-depth story of how

they birthed their child, and why they’re currently fighting with their husband. But, ever since

quarantine rolled around, things have been; dry, I mean, I barely get to go outside anymore!

How am I supposed to have my weekly tittle-tattles with my girlfriends at the Greek restaurant

down the street? I can’t whisper in their ears when they’re six feet away!

However, I’ve been spending a bit more time with my family. It’s been pretty nice, I have

to say. Except, for one thing: dinner

As an Italian girl, I love my grand meals–pastas, pizza,

prosciutto, the whole nine. But for some reason, I can’t get my family to feel the same way! I

mean, my son, Tommy, has refused to eat anything but chicken for the last 3 months. It’s driving

me bonkers. I mean, how many different ways can you make chicken? I would usually never

cook dinner this often, but since we’re stuck inside, I have no choice but to do so. At first, it was

fun; reminiscing of the days I would cook for my grandmother while she would praise me for my

amazing skills. Now, it’s torture: “Mommy, make this!”, “Mommy, I don’t like this! Make me

something else!”

At this point, I’m considering self-isolating and making my husband cook dinner. Lord, have mercy on my stomach!

Aislinn

Photography is a gift to communication. During our WebEx sessions my photography 2 classes discussed with me their need for expression and communication with others during quarantine. We decided that we would collaborate together to develop the list of projects they would be required to submit. Not only did they chose to submit more then I would have required from them, but they chose subjects that allowed them to communicate to me their personal feelings about current events and ways they were focusing on being positive and activities they were taking part in with their families. I learned so much about these wonderful individuals and each picture was worth a thousand words.

The main theme across my lessons and classes through quarantine was to find the extraordinary in the everyday ordinary. To find a way to gain optimism and support those around you. We are a community whether we are online or face to face. Creativity can channel the good. Our students found it and showed their voice visually.

I will develop lessons that encourage students to create visual solutions to each artistic problem in a variety of media. For each assignment they will marry pencil and paper with a computer generated solution. Lessons that help students connect, contemplate and create. Helping them to take virtual tours of museums, engaging digital technology for the future art curricula. Their aesthetic experience can be broadened by teaching versatility.

I would say that creating EdPuzzle videos was very helpful. At the end of every video, I would ask students for feedback and it helped me continue to improve my videos to best fit their individual needs. I did a flipped classroom model, where students would have to watch a video for homework, and we would review the topic in class the following day on Webex. It was a great way to reinforce the material and have that "class time" to work together on practice problems, interact, ask questions, and use various applications to host review games.

Screencastomatic and Mirroring360. I used my desktop to record my videos, with my iPad connected through the Mirroring360 application. Screencastify allowed me to show myself in my videos with my iPad in the background. I felt it was a nice way to get that "classroom" feel as much as we could by the students being able to see me in the video, rather than just hear me.

I also think a consistency in scheduling was helpful. Students knew that notes would be posted every day at 7:30am and due the following day at 7:30am (if there were any changes, they were notified in Canvas). Also using the calendar on Canvas was extremely helpful and kept the students organized. I put their Webex meetings and any upcoming due dates into their calendar, so they knew where to go to see what they had to do for the day.

Parent Contact! I was in touch with parents, so there were no surprises. Although parents have Canvas, many of them do not really know how to use it, or are busy and don't have time to check it. Keeping parents updated was a great way to get some struggling students to do their work. It was the extra push they needed, and most parents were supportive.

During this crazy time I found that small groups were what worked best. Having sessions with more than 10-15 people caused a lot of confusion, and many kids were losing focus. Once breaking the sessions into smaller groups, it was much easier to hold conversations and discussion of the topics that they were see in the different edpuzzles, actively learn reading etc.

I have had a lot of good feedback with making these videos as some students have shared that the videos make them feel like they are in the classroom. Using pre-scheduled announcement reminders on Canvas helped increase class participation with Webex for morning classes. By providing questions at various points throughout the film in advance, this enabled students to take their time in watching the film, answering the questions to support comprehension, while still enjoying the film.

The most challenging part during remote learning was to stay connected and reach out to my students. I found Remind really helpful because students got my text messages right on their phones. I would sent daily reminders of assignments due, Webex meetings, missing assignments or just a quick "Hello, how are you doing?". Students stayed connected through Remind as well. They would asked me questions from an assignment and I will set up the problem to get them started or give them clues. Parents received my Remind messages too.
I used Edpuzzle to teach the material. For my ENL students, if I assigned a video in English, I would do a mini lesson in Webex in Spanish and vice versa. I used Mathspace, Castle Learning and Quzizz for practice and assessments.
What students like the most was that they could find everything organized in one place, since all the apps we use are connected to Canvas.
-Karen Gutierrez

What worked well for me was creating Youtube videos of my notes. When asked, the students all agreed that they liked hearing my voice. In my videos I would go through questions and talk about my thought process. I framed the content and walked them through the what, why, and how of each example. Then students would have to submit their notes to prove they watched the video. Some worksheets were structured "I do" now "You do" and other times I used a mathspace to reinforce what they've learning from my videos.

Assessments is where I gave students more of a choice. The very first assessment I gave under quarantine offered no choice and the responses were boring and I feel like that students did not enjoy it. They were compliant. After listening to their opinions and concerns I changed the upcoming assignments. I let them choose the equations they wanted to solve and gave them a choice on how to present their knowledge of solving them. The work I got back blew my mind. I really got to see their creativity shine!
-Teresa Eng

I used screencasting to review skills before written assignments. These reviews were too "lecture" driven to do on WEBEX. So we would keep Webex meetings for Pear Decks, Group Work, short lessons, with activities to break up the "teacher talk" and keep students engaged. I used the screencasting videos to provide review material. Students could forward the video to the most appropriate concepts/skills they wanted to review, so it was differentiated. - Claudia Rudnet

My greatest success in distance learning this year came about after my first Webex meeting. I was feeling discouraged because as I asked questions I was only hearing from about one or two students out of 20+. As a result I completely reformatted my lessons and here's what worked for me:
1. created lessons to teach content using our digital learning platforms such as EdPuzzle, explorelearning.com (for labs), and Ck-12.
2. During webex meetings, I had students work through PearDecks with me so that I could assess EVERY student rather than just hear from the one or two who felt comfortable sharing out. I embedded assessment questions into the Peardecks to check for understanding of the material they learned in earlier days that week on the digital learning platforms.
3. Finally, after our webex sessions were over, I was able to review the results for each student and identify which students were on track and understanding the material and which students were struggling. I invited those struggling students to an extra help session later in that week where we reviewed content and identified misconceptions.
4. Finally, as unit assessments i didn't give tests, i gave students a choice board and where they were able to create something to show their understanding of the topic. For example I gave my 8th graders a choice board on how they wanted to share their understanding of solar and lunar eclipses. They could create a news article, write a children's book, record live from the scene of an eclipse, write a letter to an ancient civilization explaining to them that what is really happening during an eclipse so they were no longer scared, OR whatever they choose as long as it was approved by me first. The results of this project were really cool and the students did a great job.
