Body Parts

Wasps have three main body parts, the head, thorax and abdomen.  They have six legs, which are given to ALL insects.  Also, they have two sets of wings to fly.

The Queen

The queen wasp, is quite amazing.  She lays thousands of eggs every year and lives from 2 to 5 years.  The queen lives in one nest at a time and survives winter.

The Stingers

Unlike bees, wasps can repeatedly sting!  They’re very sore and some people are allergic to the stings.  Male wasps do not have a stinger, therefore they cannot sting.

Habitat

Wasps live all around the world except Antarctica.  Their nests are made out of grass, lightweight wood and barky type paper.  The nests are found in walls, in the ground and in trees.  If a wasp nest is in your neighbourhood, smash it immediately.

Hunting

Wasps get their protein from meat, not nectar.  They go hunting and put their prey in a deep sleep by paralysing them.  They do this so they can lay their eggs, and feed their young.

Wasps don’t all have their classic yellow and black stripes.  There are thousands of species of wasp that come in a multitude of colours!  Their colours vary from a radiant red to a shiny blue.
