It's a good idea to set up regular meetings with your new inductee from the word go. If they are familiar with the concept of having a chat, it'll help them to feel able to come to speak to you if there are any issues. Also you are likely to become aware of underlying issues or training needs earlier on.

We've all experienced the problem of hunting for rooms on campus - signage is not always helpful of even present! Have a walk around campus with your inductee and describe some of the tricks of finding particular rooms (e.g. IT training suite) or point out who to ask if they need directions (e.g. the security staff in library). You may help them avoid feelings of inadequacy when they inevitably get lost!

Make sure your inductee has access to all the systems they will use in their role. Consider recording a list of which software systems are needed in each role that you're responsible for - this will make it easier when new staff come on board.

Encourage your new inductee to get to know others with similar roles in other teams across the university, it may even help to arrange an initial meeting depending on how outgoing they are. Having connections in similar roles will empower them, help them to gain a support network and help them to share good practice or enable them to pass an idea by someone else.
