Prospero and Caliban: Caliban is Prospero's unwilling servant. It is said that Caliban is half-demon, as well as being physically strong. This leaves no room for question that he could easily overpower Prospero through strength alone. However, Prospero uses his knowledge of magic (and his knowledge in general) to threaten Caliban and keep him in line. This is done through Prospero saying all the ways he could torture Caliban using his magic, and using his knowledge to verbally put Caliban in his place.
Prospero and Ariel: As stated, Ariel is a very powerful fairy. He has the capability to create natural disasters and does things such as turning himself invisible to select people. Obviously, Ariel is a very magically gifted character. However, he is still Prospero's servant. Ariel did this of his own accord, to thank Prospero for freeing him from his prison. As the story starts, it is revealed that Prospero should have freed Ariel already. Ariel protests this and argues with Prospero, who then talks a circle around him using his knowledge and manipulation. Prospero and Ariel: To put it simply, Ariel is one of Prospero's servants. He offered his servitude to Prospero because Prospero was the one who freed him from his long captivity. As the story starts, we learn that Prospero is overdue in setting Ariel free from servitude. When Ariel brings it up, Prospero then proceeds to ridicule him and manipulate his feelings about the subject. He is only able to do this because of his pre-established power over Ariel. As the story progresses, we learn that Ariel is very magically strong. He is able to create devastating storms, for example. Prospero, as Ariel's master, has full access to this powerful magic. In fact, it was Prospero's control over Ariel and his magic that lead to the initial shipwreck.
