As I am heading into the nursing field, I personally don't find that the virus changes the way I feel about my choice however, I do find it scarier as nurses are caught in the middle of the pandemic. Nurses always are at the front line when they care for and try to save those who have been affected. Therefore I'd be more scared at putting myself at risk for catching the virus but we all need nurses. I'm willing to take the challenge.
~Madison

I know in my heart nursing is what I want to do 100% but I'm just concerned about how long this current situation may last and how it will impact schooling come fall. I understand how demanding the work can be for the program so I'm on the fence about waiting a year or starting the BScN program in the fall. Personally I think if I give it time this COVID 19 stuff with resolve before programs begin in the fall and to no longer continue with online classes as I prefer in person teaching experiences.
-Hailey Lalonde

I've wanted to do nursing for as long as I can remember so no it has not changed my mind. I am worried about how it will impact the BScN program though, especially with all this uncertainty on how long this will last. I think if everyone does their part and follows the guidelines and protocols then everything will hopefully be ok and be somewhat normal come this fall, but who knows time will tell. One concerning aspect about this though is the lack of PPE because yes you sign up for this in a career of nursing, but not a lack of safety and protection for yourself like we're seeing now.
-Kary-Anne Brisson

Through this pandemic we have seen the desperation for healthcare workers and I applaud those coming out of retirement to assist the crisis at hand. We have also been witness to how little supplied the industry is and the detriments behind it to the health and wellbeing of the staff in healthcare facilities. I am safe in the knowledge that although I will be subject to the field, it will be for a shorter period of time as opposed to my fellow students as obtaining my BScN is merely a means to an end to be a colligate professor. We need experienced, knowledgeable teachers to help prepare future generations of doctors, nurses, PSWs, to handle themselves daily but more importantly through a pandemic such as this. SLC has acted promptly and rationally through this whole ordeal and since it's been no secret that SLC is where I'd like to work in future, it gives me great peace of mind that the school will put the needs of the students and their workers above all else. Way to go SLC!!

- Tori Arnett

I'm hoping that a lot is learned from this pandemic and that more funding is provided to those working on the frontlines from proper PPE to providing the necessary tools needed to better help those who are ill. Helping others is something I knew I wanted to do and I look forward to getting my chance to do that in the future.

-Jacinthe Tremblay

Well this pandemic has been an interesting experience. Lots of fear and concern has been brought up and is felt everyday. It hasn't changed nor impacted my career choice due to the fact that I'm currently working on the frontline of this pandemic already. My position is to help protect the vulnerable which changes the perspective while looking at this pandemic. Due to the fact that we're doing everything we can to keep it out of our long-term care facilities because we know that if it gets in, lots of lives will be impacted or lost.

This is scary and having lack of PPE is terrifying but one thing that I can take from this experience is to personally stock up of PPE supplies once this is all over. In case there's ever a shortage again during such a serious situation, I'll at least have piece of mind knowing I'm prepared.

Liana

My desire to go into the psychiatric field is unaffected by this crisis. While this has been a world changing event that affects individuals and entire nations, it only highlights the need for trained medical professionals of all kinds. Healthcare workers are at the front lines of these kinds of crises, and while the COVID-19 crisis is raging and is the primary concern, it hasn't eliminated or lessened any other healthcare crisis that we were facing before. Things such as the opioid crisis are still going on, so healthcare workers are still sorely needed in all fields and while the reality of a pandemic can be terrifying, it is in my opinion no reason to back-out of the career path. Most careers/jobs come with associated risks and/or dangers and this is just one of the ones that healthcare workers need to deal with.
My main concern is the schooling aspect as the jump to online has been a difficult change for me and I don't believe that I could actually complete a full year of classes in this way. Hopefully everyone respects social distancing and this crisis will be resolved so that won't be an issue though!

This epidemic has not changed my view on nursing, Ive wanted to pursue this career for as long as I can remember. Having a career as a PSW has put me in danger of potentially catching diseases for the past 11 years. As I understand that there are many other diseases out there that may cause death or even put us at risk. COVID-19 is just the beginning of something new; we may have to continuously face during our lives, this may be the beginning of a virus that never ends; these are things we need to consider. However this will not steer me away from nursing.
The biggest concern for our front line staff as mentioned, is their PPE; this is an essential need in health and shouldn't be taken for granted.

My main concern during this pandemic for myself as well as other classemates is the online aspect of my/our future education. I hope that our community can strive to do their best to protect themselves at this time and also all of my fellow classmates are keeping safe and everyone is doing well.

My appreciation has grown for the career as many front line workers risk their health to help those in need. It shows how much someone is willing to do to help their community in these hard times. Seeing what nurses and health care professionals go through in times like these, and still wanting to pursue this career, has confirmed that I'm making the right decision. Since the pandemic, many of my family members have been trying to talk me out of becoming a nurse because they are concerned for my health but this has not resulted in any doubt that this is what I want to do. I can see how stressful and scary working in this field can be, but this has caused my appreciation for health care workers and the career to grow - not diminish. - Victoria

If anything covid-19 has strengthened my resolve in my career change. I've been closely following a situation in Almonte where any woman going in to the hospital in labour is to have an epidural placed whether they want one or not, and that infuriates me. There are risks to any procedure, and the more labour is interfered with, the more interference will be needed. Where did informed choice go? And ethics??? All this does is set women up to fail, and that's not okay, pandemic or not.

I've been a birth junkie since I was a wee tiny thing and saw a litter of kittens being born at my grandmother's house. Dog, cat, horse, human, doesn't matter, I live and breathe it. I love those never convenient phone calls often in the middle of the night; the sometimes long drives on speaker phone supporting a mom who's lost sight of the process, or sometimes it's a breeder who's in a panic and who really needs an extra set of hands - happened just this week, funny enough. It never gets old. Every single experience has set me on this journey towards this goal. It's been long and multifaceted, and I've fought it for a long time, but now ... now its right.

(photo of my Hurricane litter at ten days old, because I'm pretty sure we can all use an oxytocin boost about now)
