The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

The book titled: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, was about DecisionTech, a once thriving company experiencing difficulties, within their organization. The company had gained a reputation for being an unpleasant workplace. To address the organization’s issues, Kathryn Peterson was hired as DecisionTech’s new Chief Executive Officer. She replaced Jeff Shanley, who was one of the cofounders of the company. Jeff was asked to step down and become the Director of Business Development. Kathryn Peterson addressed the five dysfunctions of a team. In turn, she was able to create a cohesive team and company. The underlying themes, within the book, were about the five dysfunctions of a team. The dysfunctions were known as the absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results. The book highlights the importance in overcoming these dysfunctions and creating an effective team. It also provides guidance on how to conquer these dysfunctions. For example, Mikey was difficult employee, who challenged Kathryn and her team members daily. Therefore, to increase commitment with the team, Kathryn had to remove Mikey as an employee, to create an effective team environment. The book also places a high emphasis on the importance of increasing employee morale, overall production of an organization and most importantly how it has a positive effect on teamwork (Lencioni, 2002).

References

Lencioni, P.

The article indicates students are graduating with an excess number of hours. To address this issue, several states have adopted an “excess credit hour” policy, to help decrease the number of students graduating with excess credit hours. The State of Arizona charges 120 percent of the tuition rate, if students accumulate more than 145 credit hours at four-year universities. In turn, students in Florida are charged 200 percent of their tuition rate. The overall article indicates these policies are affecting students negatively by increasing student debt. The article also suggests, institutions of higher education need to create policies that require students to seek academic guidance to understand their degree plan. This would help decrease the percentage of students graduating with excess credit hours (Smith, 2017).

     References

Smith, A. (2017).
