3. analytical Response and artefact explanation

After making the artefact video in my backyard, I realised that I had never heard these sounds earlier. Even when I was alone, I never listened to the sound of the wind. But this time, the soundscape - including the sound of the wind blowing like it was dancing, the sound of cricket insect, butterflies and honeybees on my basil and mint plants - felt surreal to me. I could imagine myself swaying like the wind was swaying. The smell of basil and mint leaves felt like they were merging with the wind and increasing with every gush of wind. I have been living in my home for around 3 years. Until this video, I was of this feeling that we could not hear much of the traffic. But after listening to this very carefully, I could hear the cars and buses driving through from quite far from my home.

Overall, the sounds of birds, trees, leaves, insects - all together - just in one video made me feel at peace, which I never realised I had it in my backyard. Whenever I wanted some peace and nature, I used to go beside a lake, but it made me think that if we listen, peace is everywhere.

I remember listening to all the birds when I was a child. But when I grew up back in my home country, the birds started to vanish, and I thought I would never be able to hear it. But after coming to Australia, I am thankful that I can hear them again.

I have a nature wall in my room where I work. I think I am going to use this video in my room while having group time sitting under the nature wall. The children will listen to the audio and will share what they can hear and see. I am sure it would be a calming experience for them.

Explanation of my critical response

When Oliveros, P. (2015) said that listening is a lifetime experience and a practice of deep listening, I feel she knew that most of us never really listen to the sounds of nature. For instance, the sound of the wind blowing or gushing was so loud that it felt like someone was whistling in my ears. Therefore, it stuck with me that for my critical response to the wind, I created music while whistling (or trying to whistle) like the wind. (creative response on sound).

For creative response on drama , I enacted a drama with my son while me sing "Bee bee bumble bee" to him.

Whereas for creative response on movement , I moved with my scarf with the wind.

I could visualise the Manna Gun leaves from Aunty Joy Murphy's Australia Day Victoria's (2021) 'Welcome to Country' video dancing with the sounds of the wind.

The first thing when I saw the honeybees on my basil plant was the "bee bee bumble bee" song which I sing every day in my room with my children during the group time or while waiting for them to wash their hands.

I created a movement act with my dupatta (scarf) when I was asking others if I was dancing like a butterfly or swaying like trees while wind is blowing.
