Phytoplankton are microalgae that form an essential component of the marine food chain. These single-celled plants provide nourishment to many marine species and they also play an important role in regulating the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Many types of algae are used as shelter for some bottom-dwelling animals. They also help other plants that grow on different types of plants.

Filter feeders include creatures like baleen whales, whale sharks, and certain crustaceans. Baleen whales suck water into their enormous mouths, then they use their enormous tongues to force the water out through the baleen, but tiny organisms like krill and plankton get stuck in the baleen for the whale to eat.

The ocean around the island of Yonaguni has a high population of hammerhead sharks. Sharks can detect one part blood in a million parts water, and they keep growing new teeth whenever a tooth is lost, but they must keep moving to breathe.
