The concept of "intersectionality" highlights the various forms of oppression that individuals and groups experience. For instance, black women in the US experience sexism and racism. They are subjected to multiple forms of discrimination, including structural intersectionality, which refers to the forms of subordination that distinguish women of color's lived experiences from those of white women and men of color, as well as political intersectionality, which refers to practices that fail to acknowledge how women of color's position is distinct, and representational intersectionality that identifies how women of color are erased through language and symbols in everyday life.

Although I belong to the white cis-gender majority group, my interest in this topic is inspired by my black best friend, who desires to transition but has faced numerous challenges in the gender identity journey. The intersection of race with gender identity and sexuality offers a unique set of issues for black Americans. Notably, my friend has only lived in the US for eleven years. What is even more daunting for her is the fear of “coming out” to her parents. I use the pronouns she/her to my friend because those are her preferred pronouns, although she was labeled male-at-birth. But apart from me and a few others, everyone else at home refers to her using he/him pronouns.

Challenges Faced by Black Trans People

Black transgender people face numerous challenges, including high unemployment rates, which sometimes lead to homelessness. Also, they often live in extreme poverty due to the systemic discrimination directed toward them. Most importantly, these group faces high levels of healthcare disparities. My friend often expresses the deeply felt anxiety she gets whenever she goes to a healthcare facility. This is because, like every other person in her life, some practitioners often ignore her explicit desire to be referred to by her preferred pronouns. At the same time, since school is the only place where she feels comfortable being herself, she often has to carry different clothing from home so she can change into what she is comfortable with since she cannot just dress how she wants at home.

Disproportionate Rates of Discrimination Against Black Trans Women

Racism and transphobia result in disproportionately high instances of violence against trans individuals of color. We have learned from the articles covered in class that trans people are four times more likely to experience a violent crime than their cis peers. Due to their experiences with cissexism and anti-Black racism, black trans women continue to face the highest risk of violence. These individuals also come into contact with violent police officers and other law enforcement personnel. As a result, my friend's main worry about going through with her transition is that she would become the target of violence just for being who she feels she should be.

How to Create an Inclusive Society for Transgender People of Color

Educating the public about trans identities and the challenges encountered by trans individuals of color is one way to do this. Second, we can fight for anti-discrimination legislation and regulations that include all aspects of life, including health, employment, and housing, for transgender people. The government should make it simpler for people of these backgrounds to get high-quality medical treatment that respects their cultural norms. Last but not least, transgender persons of color need increased access to safe spaces and support networks where they can connect with others who share their identities and experiences.
