The town of Chaiten is situated 10km south-west of the volcano, was blanketed with ash. About 4,000 people who lived there were evacuated by boat, along with another 1,000 residents from the nearby town of Futaleufu. Smaller settlements to the south-east such as Chubut and Rio Negro also received heavy ash falls. The ash plume was so thick in some parts of neighboring Argentina that flights were diverted and airports, highways and schools were forced to close.

The Chaiten volcano is one of many along the western seaboard of South America. With 122 volcanos, including 40 historically active ones, Chile has one of the longest volcanic chains in the world. It is situated above a subduction zone where the Pacific Ocean Plate is consumed beneath the South American continental crust. The volcano, which featured a lava dome within a caldera about 2.5km wide and 4km long, is composed of viscous rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastic and is typical of magmas rising through the young fold mountains of the Andes.
