The visitor/resident distinction is important, but I think visitor needs to be redefined. What's a short way of saying "my data is only seen by machine learning algorithms not real people"? 😁😂

They seem to be just tools. Are they social media? Or are they tools which inhabit an electronic environment?

Response: Social media has emerged from the broader context of Medicine 2.0 and has been defined in a variety of ways. Some definitions have been synonymous with Medicine 2.0 and encompass  e-learning and distance learning tools.  Others have taken a more narrow focus and defined social media as a “collection of web-based technologies that share a user-focused approach to design and functionality, where users actively participate in content creation and editing through open collaboration between members of communities of practice.”
Social media tools (such as Facebook or Twitter) have the potential to build on the success of e-learning with tools that are more learner-generated, collaborative, and engaging.

Is this considered within a social media umbrella? Or is this stretching the definition too far?

Response: it depends which kind of data, I think the domains get crossed here. Think analyzing big, open data , these can be considered under the social media umbrella, although not all big data are open. in this case I am not sure we can insert the research under the SoMe umbrella.

And how do we assist staff who don't want this?

Response: This is a thorny issue that I've encountered with students as well. This is why universities have their behind firewall systems, but even so causes some students distress. It is challenging to require anyone who doesn't want to participate in a digital space to do so, however with new staff that could be an expectation of the job as that is the employer's perogative.
