the time period is the sail om witch trials and it takes place in an England with real witches, wizards, and magic herbs.

What does the setting look like, sound like, feels like, etc...?

the setting smells of people burning and in a necromancers house it smells like rotting flesh, it looks like some one burning at a cross and being hung in the street Tyburn, it also looks like the city of London, England

What are some similarities and differences to today's time period or America?

There are more differences than similarities. the differences included in the book are that there are laws against magic while our laws don't even mention magic. Also their punishments for breaking laws are being burned or hung in front of the community, though we put people in jail instead. the books setting is in the past in England so they don't have electricity or paper so the laws are posted on stone tablets. so similarities are that we both have secret police and trials to determine if some one is guilty. another similarity is that the people on charge have a lot of power.

I was surprised when Blackwell proclaimed her sentence for punishment for being a witch. I was surprised because in the book Elizabeth is one of his best witch hunters(a witch hunter is a person who arrests people who have magic herbs or are using witch craft for better or worse). She is sentenced to death by Blackwell for using 1 tiny herb that can't hurt anyone. I was surprised because I expected him to pardon her sentence. The character Elizabeth has changed a lot from the beginning of the book. For example her thoughts on magic and wizards and witches has changed. At first Elizabeth thought magic was dangerous and evil and now she thinks that magic is useful and a great asset. Two people saved her life using magic and this helped her realize that magic truly is good. This reminds me of how I used to think of Spanish class. Before I thought Spanish was useless, that I would never use in my life but now I know that it is very useful. If I go to a Spanish speaking country I would not be confused. In the beginning of the book, Elizabeth is very close to a friend named Celeb but later they both changed and grew apart. Celeb used to come by and talk to Elizabeth all the time but towards the middle of the book where I am now, he does not go see her and she does not go to see him. This reminds me of the poem we are reading in class called "JB and I". In this poem the two brothers are twins that used to do everything together until JB started dating Ms. Sweet Tea. upon reading the end and finding out that they have a mutual attraction/relationship I realized it was a circular story because john's mother and sister were arrested and killed by a witch hunter. but in the end Elizabeth a witch hunter saved his life. I fell sorry for Elizabeth because she killed her former friend and who always helped her and was her role model. I can sort of relate because I had a friend that I thought was loyal and they weren't loyal so they choose other friends over me. I also can empathy's for her because if I accidentally killed my former best friend I would only sulk and never face it. But she was brave and did not try and believe that it wasn't true and deny it. I am unhappy that at the end of the book because she did not kill Blackwell. I was unhappy because Blackwell than became king, he lied and tried to kill them, he killed most of his apprentices, He killed 100s of witches, he torcheres people, and he lied to become king and blamed the problems on the old king as a lie. I feel as though justice was not served. Blackwell in one of the other books is eventually killed, but he is still a formidable foe in the next book. I am expecting justice to be served in the next book of the series. I was surprised when Elizabeth figured out the whole reasoning behind the 13th tablet. It made so much sense yet it was a surprise because they made to make a bunch of foreshadowing but you wouldn't realize it until you got to the section where she sees the tablet. It all makes sense when you read that section of the book. I was also surprised when everything in the book came together and it was so obvious but so well hidden that if I were to read again I would notice the hints. Throughout the book.

I am wondering how Nicholas became a powerful wizard. He doesn't have a master and he has an apprentice. Either his master died or he finished his apprenticeship to become a wizard.  Even if he were to finish his apprenticeship we probably would have seen his master with the reformist.  Plus, if the master was dead Nicholas would still talk about him and say how he was a great master. I am also wondering what type  elf magic Nicholas specializes in. So far each wizard specializes in one type of magic. For example, they could be a Seer and see the future, they could be a Healer and heal people, there are necromancers who bring people back from the dead to serve them, or he could be a fire wizard. The strange thing is that we haven't seen him use any types of these magics throuought the book. We have only seen him do three things with his magic: 1) open a locked prison door without a key, 2) make illusions of himself, and 3) make a image of a solar system of the galaxy on the ceiling of a room. None of these are specific types of magic. I was surprised when Johnny killed the Soc because he is a kind hearted, lovable person who wouldn't hurt anyone and would never try to get him or his friends in trouble. 1. the main character is Elizabeth she is a determined, intelligent, caring strong, and brave character.
2. some secondary characters are Nicholas and Celeb. Nicholas is the person who saves her and causes her to join the Reformist. Celeb is the one who caused her to be a witch hunter and then she was able to help the reformist because she knew how to fight and she had her stigma.
3. the problem in the book is that magic is ban and if you use magic you will be burned.
4. the main character is trying to destroy the 13th tablet so Nicholas won't die and he can stop Blackwell.
5. I like the fighting and the magic because fantasy and action are my favorite genres and it makes the book come together.
6. Ponyboy fell asleep in the parking lot with Johnny and when he got home it was 3am. Darry, his older brother, got very angry because he was worried. He yelled at Ponyboy then Soda yelled at Darry for yelling at Ponyboy. Then Darry yelled at Soda for him to stay out of it, then Ponyboy yelled at Darry for yelling at Soda. I can see both sides of this and I think they are both to blame.
