From November 18 to November 20, I was privileged to take part in a creative writing camp organized by Ellips, this time held in Kääriku. The camp was an excellent opportunity for me to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and to focus on my own creative work. A total of 10 people participated in the camp, with most of us working hard on bachelor's, master's or doctoral theses. My project was related to creative writing, and I made sure to make the most of this unique opportunity by devoting my full attention to it. The camp was a great success, with all of us inspired and motivated to continue on our projects and to reach our goals. In the end, I was left with a great sense of accomplishment, having made considerable progress towards the completion of my own writing project.

Mind map, primary reflection (20th November)

On the second day of writing camp, I was determined to make significant progress in the course's creative work. Not knowing how to even begin, the biggest obstacle I was facing was how I could manage to balance the course expectations with my own writing style. To get some guidance, I discussed with some of my camp-mates and they suggested that I should start by creating a mind map based on the conclusions I came to.

In order to ensure I had a better understanding of the assignment and the changes that needed to be made, I took some time to analyze my own writing style. To aid in this process, I read some of my old poems which served as a useful reference. On top of that, I conducted more research based on the feedback I had been given by the lecturer. All this helped me to come up with more comprehensive plan for the project.

Grus-poetry (?)

For one of my other courses, I conducted an analysis of Bernard Kangro's poem "Sügis", during which I became familiar with the so-called anthro-poetry. In cultural anthropology, since the 1980s, researchers have used poetry to describe their ethnographic observations and findings. This type of poetry, anthro-poetry, is an existential form of expression, conveying non-fictional events and occurrences, while describing the surroundings, sociological and cultural world, while being central to the feelings and sensations of the author as a person. This type of poetry is a way of connecting the author to their own experience, and providing a unique perspective on the world. An example of this type of poetry can be found in Renato Rosaldo's poem:

NO SWIMMER

The river turns brown,

swells, churns, rises, dives, slants.

No raft rides its surface

no swimmer dares its current.

On high ground men and women teeter

as if on a precipice.

Persistent rumors,

Soldiers at checkpoints torture suspects

bodies mutilated bullet-riddled

Reading about it, I realized that maybe I have to approach the task of this course analogously. Let´s call it Grus-poetry, as it is a form of writing that attempts to capture the chaos, turbulence, and emotion of the common crane world in a poetic form.

Grus grus (sookurg) in Estonian mythology

In order to write poems that would truly reflect my own "style" (which generally includes usage of either fake or real mythology, archaisms etc), I felt the need to do a small research on how the Common crane is portrayed in Estonia, and what other names the bird was known by. To further my investigation, I also started looking into this topic during my writing camp, where I had the opportunity to further delve into the subject and expand my knowledge. With this newfound information, I was able to use it as a source of inspiration for my poems, and I am confident that my work will be enriched by the knowledge I gained from my research.

Overall I am satisfied with the result and am truly delighted that everything ended well. I went out of my comfort zone and tried something new, exploring different styles of poetry, writing my very first poem in Võron and touching upon topics that I wouldn't usually approach.
It was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to a new world of possibilities and I'm thankful for the opportunity that I was given to explore and create something of my own.

After consideration, I chose the most exquisite poems (in my opinion) to present to You. I made sure to pay attention to the requirements of the assignment and I hope I have interpreted them correctly.
I believe these poems will be a great representation of my understanding of what is expected and I am looking forward to your feedback.

Why Common Crane?

I'm captivated by the beauty and grace of common cranes. Whenever I'm lucky enough to see a flock of them, I'm filled with admiration. Even though they're not rare near my ancestral home, the sight of them dancing in the sky, wings outstretched and calling melodiously, is unforgettable.

Process of poetry writing

I chose to add another dimension to my work by experimenting with, and studying, new styles of poetry (because I am me). To do this, I started by writing down types of poems that I was already familiar with and then did additional research to broaden my knowledge. In order to make sure I was focusing on the most important elements, I checked my mindmap where I had marked aspects of Common crane´s life/physiology which I felt were worth/crucial to include. After this, my mind started linking the "vibes" of some features and types of poetry together, and I began to see how different elements could be combined to create a unique style. Of course, this was only the beginning of my journey to explore and create something different. I continued to research, brainstorm, and experiment to create a new type of poetry for me.

Taking a more in-depth look at my choices, I elaborated on the logic behind them at the same page as the poems I had written. I wanted to make sure that my readers understood not just the words I had selected, but the reasons why I chose them. In doing so, I hoped to give more insight into the thought process behind my writing.
