Operated Sports Leadership Qual. for year 9/10/11.

Somewhat effective. The part time teachers seemed to create some issues. The part time were the older teachers. Their standards were slack compared to those who were full-time. i.e. lack of discipline with PE kit.

- 5 with me (3 male, 2 female) 3 part time.
- Ages from 19-42
- One male has a Head of Year 8&9 role
- One female is Head of Creative and Vocational (PE, Art, Drama, Music, D.T. and food). Teaches more KS4 than KS3
- One male is an RQT
- The team is very effective. Everyone knows their roles in making the team work and everyone works towards a common goal/target.
- Quite close and so misunderstandings and arguments are very rare. If there are any misunderstandings then they are dealt with quite quickly.

2 Male 2 Female Teachers -
1 Head PE Teacher
3 Support/Regular Teachers

Head of PE had more of a managerial teaching role and had to teach as well as handle clubs and other important responsibilities such as giving other PE teacher's certain jobs.

Other PE teachers had to follow these orders and carry these jobs out effectively as well as teach their own classes based on the national curriculum and short/long term plans that were pinned up in the PE department office.

As a team, I would say that the PE department I worked with were very effective as they had a type of system which they seemed to follow. This could be seen as a managerial teaching style system as they followed it and I was told they had been following it for years and everything seemed to run fluidly without any hiccups or mishaps. The head of PE is like the overseer as well as the leader of the group and was very good at directing the other PE teachers when it came to how they performed in lessons and what they could do to become better teachers. As well as this, team talks would be held in the office to discuss how to handle certain students better such as students with SEN.

Yes! PE is part of the national curriculum its just as important as maths and english etc.
Through PE you can develop a range of different skills under 'one subject. ie. group work, independent work, problem solving, creative, health, technical and tactical skill. All can be mirrored in everyday life and childs future.

Yes! PE is the only time where students can be physically active in a week compared to English and Maths where they are sat at a desk all lesson reading and writing without needing to be right or wrong all the time. They can use problem solving skills to make right and wrong moves in various situations.
Schools don't pay enough attention because they are judged on performance in academic subjects and exams rather than how often students are physically active for. Some only have one hour of PE per week

Yes, I believe that that the PE department is very important in schools because they are the ones in charge of understanding one of the most important things in life which is exercise and keeping healthy. Sport is a form of exercise and exercise can help prolong life which is what schools want their students to understand and develop understanding about. PE is also important because it can help children find their passion in sport by teaching them a certain sport which they may find a liking to and they may want to engage in extra curricular activities around this particular sport leading to a lifestyle in this sport.
