"...qualitative research calls for the researcher to become increasingly vigilant in order to reflect and address the role of subjectivities in research with academic rigor and trustworthiness." This is a goal that sounds easy, but will take some effort. This is a valuable asset for a researcher to have - the ability to produce work that is authentic, transparent, and worthy.

This chapter reminded me that my learnings from home, from my culture, and peoples history is valid. No matter how engrained western thinking is on my daily life. This is hard at times, specially when I have to question and or critique institutional structures like education. I know they are built with rich history, but they are not formed to change when they become outdated.

Chapter 4 gave a clear description of what IBR is and what type of consent we need to look into before conducting our studies. As qualitative researchers, our studies are not data or inanimate objects, therefore, we have to understand all aspects of our own research. How we frame the research can lead to either benefitting the community or hurting it. So IBR in a way is our guideline to making sure our studies are morally benefitting society.

Is race concept just a Western ideology?

This reading made me reflected back to my earlier time in my Master program. At one point, I questioned why Americans are obsessed with race. Over the years, I came to realize that race is built within every society. Whether or not that society want to acknowledge it or not is something else. However, people tend to criticize Western view on race more because somewhere a long the line the sense of community and empathy are lost. People have a more individualistic mindset, which does not help with the "us versus them" mentality.

What stood out to me most was the value of fieldwork and what she calls “participant witnessing.” Tracy explains that fieldwork helps researchers see what participants are saying and also what they are not saying, which is just as important, if not more. I really am starting to think how as researchers we are able to connect with our participants and create an environment were we can find deeper meaning about how things work they way they do and why.

“Western interests remain dominant” struck me because it reminds me how easily they can infiltrate even well-meaning scholarship. This challenges me to be intentional about how I frame my research questions and the way I include marginalized voices in the process. Additionally, I continue to think about whose voice matters and how oftentimes certain groups have been left out. I am reminded that in this work, it is my responsibility to decolonize my own practices and bring to light those whose voice hasn't always been hear.
