How can teachers create an open classroom that is free of gender stereotypes?
1. Teachers must be aware of their own beliefs and behaviors. Teachers should not base their teaching off of societal norms or the roles that men and women play in the media.
2. Teachers must monitor the frequency and nature of their verbal interaction. Do not give more praise or opportunities to either gender.
3. Teachers must make sure their language and curriculum materials are gender-free and balanced. It is common for people to use male pronouns when describing situations, yet teachers should use gender neutral pronouns to describe unidentified people.
4. Teachers should use the tools of classroom chores and activities to include everyone. Having boys and girls switch jobs equally and engage in play together unifies the class.
5. Teachers can include students in discussions about gender and stereotyping to help create more progressive thinkers who are not biased due to societal pressures.
6. Teachers must continue to be sensitive to the changing needs of both genders. The emotional and mental needs of students should always be a priority.
7. Teachers should respect all students and challenge boys and girls equally. Having high expectations for each student and seeing students as more than a gender knocks down gender barriers and creates an open classroom.

1. Boys get called on more, more praise, they can use science equipment more. Boys get more attention because they are more active- more likely to get in trouble (needs constant supervision)

2. Gender identity is how a person thinks about themselves while gender expression is how people choose to express their gender

3. Making sure that both genders are equal (calling people the same, hypothetical situations- use "this" person), getting everyone to work together (challenging boys and girls equally), have all students complete the same tasks

4. 1971- 70% of girls vs. 90% of boys, less than 40% completed a year of college- less than 20% have graduated, boys have a higher drop out rate than girls do now presently, 2016- more females graduated then males

5. Using preferred pronouns/names, monitor situations of "joking" about gender in the classroom, using gender neutral language when teaching,
