I think all of your ideas are great and they make sense. My first thought was that Odysseus misses the rush of battle as he fights alongside his his soldiers and friends. For example if you play a sport, I'm gonna use horse riding, (of course) when you are standing outside the gate you feel the adrenaline rush and you love it (or you hate it).
