         <title>Dawes Act (1887)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Dawes Act (sometimes called the Dawes Variety Act or General Allocation Act), passed in 1887 under President Grover Cleveland, allowed the federal government to divide tribal lands. The federal government aimed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream American society by encouraging them toward farming and farming, which meant dividing tribal lands into individual parcels. Only Native Americans who accepted the division of tribal lands were allowed to become American citizens. This ended when the government stripped more than 90 million acres of tribal lands from Native Americans and then sold those lands to non-Native American citizens.</div>]]></description>
