My notes for From The Ashes are vague but I learned alot from the book. Before reading From The Ashes I did not like reading at all but Jesse told the story so well I was able to visualize the entire book like a movie. The book really helped my inferring skills because there were large gaps in the book I had to fill myself. The book also taught me more than just reading skills, it taught me about the reality of addiction and homelessness.

My pre viewing of Indian Horse

After rereading my notes on my preview of Indian Horse I realized the story had a more complex meaning then what I initially thought. When previewing my next book From The Ashes I looked more into the book. Instead of just reading the back of the book I read a few pages in the middle of the book to get a sense of what the book was about. This task helped continue my critical thinking skills especially when it comes to picking a book to read.

A passage from my Personal Essay

Rereading this I believe this was a great introduction to my personal essay. The slow pacing, which begins with the minor action of bending my knee and builds to the terrifying instances of my knee locking, is evidence of a well crafted story. An area I could work on is using more imagery in my writing so I am showing the reader what is happening and not telling them.

Planning sheet for Indian Horse Essay

I found using the planning sheet was a great way to generate ideas for the essay. The planning sheet in addition helped made sure I hit every critical step in formulating a analytical essay. However I found it difficult to find a flow with the ideas. Next time I would benefit from making my own planning sheet.

Reel Injun

As we were watching the movie I wrote down keywords so I could remember certain scenes to research more about later. For example, I researched more about the Wounded Knee Massacre. I found the notes extremely useful when I went back and read them because I started to remember the movie. I remembered the scene about the boys at summer camp acting like "savages." I found the scene quite disturbing and racist. By taking note of keywords, I strengthened my lateral reading skills. Overall I found the movie to be a great representation of how indigenous people were treated in Hollywood.

Introduction To Richard Wagamese

Researching Richard Wagamese was a great way to get into his mind before reading Indian Horse. It helped paint a picture of what the book was going to be about. Also I found researching before I read the book helped give context to place's like Manitouwadge and team's like the Toronto Marlboros.

I found the book meetings were a great way to convey my thoughts and feelings about the book. It was great for when I was unsure about something. I prepared for the meetings by making sure I have reached the reading target and I previewed the questions and made notes.

Seven Fallen Feathers Presentation

I prepared for my presentation by writing down jot notes on a little piece of paper for each one of my photos. During my presentation I spoke clearly but I found myslelf looking down at my cue card too much. In the future I need to make sure I look at the people I am presenting too. When making the handout I did a good job summarizing his story making sure I covered all the major parts.
