The many things that indicate wealth in Okonkwo's village, such as yams, are the very things he was deprived of in his youth because of his father. Okonkwo seems incapable of escaping his guilt of father's many failures and in recompense for them he becomes the best of many villages and strives to have more, and essentially be more, than his father was. Because of his fatal flaw, a fixation on not being seen as weak like his father, Okonkwo expresses himself in an almost always violent manner. There is no place in his life or the lives of his family for gentleness. I doubt Okonkwo would be susceptible to therapy as we have now, even though it would be a blessing for his family. I believe he is doomed. He may be great in the eyes of the village but something will bring him down and it is likely to be himself.

We are given a glimpse into why Okonkwo resents his father so much. Besides Unoka's laziness and lack of wealth to pass on to his son he also brings disgrace because of the way he died, through terrible swelling and without the acceptance from their goddess. Okonkwo's determination to be successful are what saves him from repeating his father's mistakes. I don't believe his life is much better than his father's though. Living constantly in someone's shadow, every action calculated by yourself, must be a dreadful existence.

Okonkwo has a very unhealthy amount of rage. He beat his wife over some leaves? In one moment he is thinking of his favorite daughter and when he met one of his wives yet the next he's beating said wife and scolding the daughter. He seems to believe any emotion other than ones deemed "manly" are a weakness. He took his father's extreme laziness and turned it into extreme violence and unachievable expectations for those around him. There seems to be more going on with his daughter, Ezima, but I'm not sure what it is. It just seems suspicious concerning the conversation between her mother and the priestess.

Okonkwo was wealthy and well known, but Unoka on the other hand was poor and didn't have a title. Okonkwo is super strict to his son who is only 12 show that he probably doesn't want his son to be like Unoka. In the first chapter, it said Okonkwo has a few wives and Unoka only had one and he could barely feed them. Does the amount of wife represent their wealth?

In this chapter, I feel like it is talking about a holiday that seem like only this tribe celebrate it and that Okonkwo's wives and daughter are more like his servant than family. The New Yam Festival sound like a fun celebration considering there's foods and activities, but mostly foods. He shot his wife because he heard her talk ill about his guns?!

"A toad does not run in the daytime for nothing"

It seem like the people in this culture tend to compare things to animal (aka nature-ish) Could it be that since where they live, its mostly farming and agriculuture stuff, so they connect more to nature? They people there seem to be hardworking people since they believe that their hard work gonna pay off. People do things for a reason.

The Poisonwood Bible is in the perspective of outsiders whereas Things Fall Apart is in an Ibo perspective. They both contain references to the bible though- in Things Fall Apart Okonkwo said he would understand and adhere to the killing of his "son" if the Oracle willed it, similar to the story of Abraham and Isaac.

We have the average Mister, Mrs., and Miss, but we also have Doctor, Judge, President- identifiers that we place on people seen as higher or in higher positions in our society.
