Its origin can be traced back to West Africa. Legend has it, the name "Junkanoo" originated from John Canoe, an African Tribal Chief who came to the Bahamas as a slave and insisted on having a festival/feast to celebrate. It happens at night as that is usually when the plantation owners were asleep, and is celebrated at night to uphold the tradition.
