PARENTS AS A KEY STAKEHOLDER: Their Characteristics

Singaporean parents are very much involved in partnerships to enhance student learning. Majority generally fit the Asian parent stereotype, of strong support of and high involvement in their children's education, spending money to give their child the ‘best’ assessment materials (tuition, practice papers) and programs (Khong, 2008). They also have a "strong say" and "very vocal views" in how schools are run (MOE, 2001, p. 16). On the other end of the spectrum, there are full-time working parents who neglect their child's education.

How can we adapt our teaching pedagogy? What can we do in the classroom?

As a BT, we need to manage all these expectations. We need to:
1. intrinsically value the concept of partnership, and reframe our mindsets of collaboration and cooperation with parents.
2. engage parents (survey them? converse with them over the phone?), who know their children’s unique interests, capabilities and prior knowledge, in designing lessons, so that you can better know your learners and 'customize' lessons. Accordingly, structure their learning experiences, support their learning attempts, or regulate the complexity and difficulty levels of information presented in the classroom.
3. work with parents: nearing examinations, parents are likely to help their children with intensive and repetitive coaching and practice (tuition!). Establish in them an understanding that ‘over-drilling’ does not prepare for ‘higher-order’ thinking questions.
(Khong, 2008).

In literary studies (sec), we want to infuse an element of criticality into our teaching and learning processes. In nurturing critical thinkers, we would want students to understand the power of ideology, and that could be done as we make their learning meaning and purposeful by bringing in films and pop music.
