one thought i had during reading the article as well as reading TKAM is that there are so many differences in today's society compared to the great depression / 1930's, such as opportunities in school and work for women and some men, and that wealth matters to this day as well as back in time. wealth is a very important society message that you can have money and still treat everyone equally but not every person feels that way and acts entitled.

I thought that it was shocking that school was considered a luxury and most kids couldn't go to school but i thought about how we still see a lot of these issues today with schools still being massively underfunded

Children in the 1930's had less access to the things that children today have, such as technology, and even an education for some.

This reveals that the characters/setting in To Kill a Mockingbird is going to be "less fortunate" and not as advanced as in the present (less technology, more low-middle income families, etc)

The children today are more fortunate to have technology and heavily improved education/employment. Overall the infrastructure has improved, however many kids now are not in touch with reality like children in the 1930's. Back then they played more games outside and had face to face interactions all day everyday, but now socialization is consumed with technology and the media. Ultimately, there is a win and a loss. This reveals that in book, their might be conflict between social class and opportunities within the society.

I think children from the 30s were more independent and matured faster than those of today. In the 30s kids were working 8 hour shifts and contributing to household income and today kids cry if their iPads are taken away and they have to clean their own messes. I think that the kids in TKAM will be more mature than an average kid today.

Food was a big difference in the 1930s because since there was the Great Depression, most people starved, and their main protein source was Jello. Now in the present, there is a lot of fast food, but agriculture is mostly owned by companies instead of families like back then.

One of the things that makes the 1930s different from the 2010s to 2020s is technology. We can listen to music on phones, computers, etc. They read hard cover books and we can read digital books. The characters of how to kill a mocking bird don't have a lot of entertainment options. So Scout reads as entertainment

I think children in the 1930's were less educated due to the lack of schooling back then, where school is required now. Because of the time period racism is very prominent in school systems, jobs, and other aspects. this reveals that in to Kill a Mockingbird the tone will be glum and dull due to the presence of the great depression.

Children today are more fortunate and have more resources for school, like smartboards, computers, ipads, and phones. We have way more technology compared to in 1937 when they first used radios for virtual learning. And everyone is required to go to school, but in the Great Depression kids wouldn't go some need to support their family and get a job. Compared to Burris Ewell who only attended school on the first day this would not be allowed today.

Children today have less physical and meaningful relationships and activities with most of their free time and even schooling being online. This reveals to us that they will develop strong relationships with the people around them since most people are impoverished but have a strong sense of community and the scarcity of money will lead to less transportation forcing them to get along with the people near them.

Children in the 1930's did not have access to a lot of the items that kids have today. For entertainment they had to make up a their own games which relates to To Kill a Mocking Bird because we see scout, Jem, and Dill making up games based on their surroundings. Where as today kids might prefer to watch a movie or play an already known game. Additionally it might be easier to tell who had money and who didn't during this time because many kids families could not afford things like shoes which are more easily accessible today.

The children today are so much more privileged than what they were back during the great depression. Kids now have so many assets available and technology at their fingertips. Kids today don't both play with physical toys and barely play games that aren't to do with technology. No kids of today would survive in the 1930 ´s. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the finches are well above the average family during that time - Jack Del Santo

There were many differences between the children in the 1930s and children now. Children in the 1930s were much less fortunate due to poverty, for example there was less access to technology and children were working long/difficult hours to help contribute to their families income.
