Letter to a City Official

I researched the issue of mental health in schools and noticed how many students silently struggle without proper support systems. To take civic action, I wrote a formal letter to the mayor of my city, explaining why public schools urgently need more mental health resources. I included data from the CDC about rising student anxiety and depression, and shared personal observations about how stress and lack of emotional support are affecting students daily. I asked for specific actions, like funding more school counselors and launching district-wide mental health awareness initiatives. I wrote the letter respectfully and clearly, explaining that these changes would improve both academic performance and overall student well-being. I ended by encouraging collaboration between local leaders and students so we can find real, lasting solutions.

Political Beliefs Reflection

For this action, I wrote a deep reflection on my personal political beliefs and how they’ve developed. I started by explaining how my family, school education, and online platforms have all played a role in shaping my views. I reflected on my stance on several issues — like education, affordable healthcare, and climate change — and why I feel strongly about them. I admitted that some of my views have changed over time as I’ve learned more from different people and experiences. I also wrote about how I try not to just follow one side blindly, but instead try to stay informed and open to new perspectives. Writing this helped me understand how my values connect with real policies and why it’s important to be politically aware, even as a student.

Digital Awareness Project on Recycling

I created a digital awareness poster using Canva to promote recycling and environmental responsibility among students. The poster included five shocking statistics about plastic waste, three easy tips for students to recycle better, and a quick section on how recycling helps reduce climate damage. I focused on making the design clear and visually appealing so people would actually want to read it. I shared it in my class group chat, posted it on social media, and emailed it to my teacher to share with others. The goal was to inspire small everyday changes that can lead to bigger environmental impact. This project made me realize how powerful digital tools are for educating others and that awareness campaigns don’t always need to be in person to make a difference.

Editorial Response on School Safety

After reading a published editorial about school safety strategies, I decided to write my own response focusing on the emotional side of student safety. The original editorial emphasized things like cameras, metal detectors, and police presence, but I respectfully disagreed. In my response, I argued that mental health services and emotional support should be just as important as physical security. I explained how schools often miss signs of emotional distress and how early mental health support could prevent violence or self-harm. I supported my points with data from school psychology sources and wrote about the need for more counselors and mental wellness programs. Writing this helped me see how editorial writing is a form of civic participation — it’s about using your voice and research to offer better ideas and influence change.

Interview with a Parent on Civic Responsibility

For this action, I interviewed my parent to learn about their view on civic responsibility. They talked about growing up during a time when not everyone in their community had access to voting or political representation. They told me how they didn’t always care about politics when they were younger but later realized how important it is to stay informed, vote, and hold leaders accountable. We discussed how different generations view protests, elections, and government trust, and I asked what advice they’d give young people. Their main advice was: don’t just complain — do something, even if it’s small. This conversation helped me realize that being civically responsible isn’t just about knowing the news — it’s about taking action to protect rights and improve your community, no matter how old you are.

Understanding My Political Beliefs

Growing up in a family that actively discussed current events and societal issues, I developed an early interest in politics. These dinner table conversations, coupled with my education and exposure to diverse perspectives through social media, have significantly shaped my political beliefs. I have come to value the importance of social equality, environmental sustainability, and accessible education for all.

Education plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual’s future, and I firmly believe that everyone should have access to quality education regardless of their socioeconomic background. Policies that promote equitable funding for schools and support for teachers are essential in bridging the educational gap. Additionally, integrating comprehensive mental health services within schools can address the growing concerns surrounding student well-being. Studies indicate that early intervention is key to supporting students, yet few educators have the tools and support necessary to address these concerns.

Environmental sustainability is another cornerstone of my political ideology. The pressing issue of climate change requires immediate and sustained action. I support policies that invest in renewable energy, enforce environmental regulations, and promote sustainable practices. By prioritizing the health of our planet, we ensure a better future for generations to come.

Reevaluating School Safety: The Imperative of Mental Health Support

In a recent editorial, the emphasis was placed on enhancing physical security measures in schools to ensure student safety. While metal detectors and surveillance systems may deter external threats, this approach overlooks a critical component of school safety: mental health support. Addressing the internal challenges that students face is paramount in creating a truly secure and supportive educational environment.

Data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reveals that one in six youth have a mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression, but only half receive any mental health services. Furthermore, during the 2021–22 school year, only 49% of public schools reported providing diagnostic mental health assessment services to evaluate students.

By investing in mental health resources, schools can proactively address issues before they escalate into crises. Early intervention is key to supporting students, yet few educators have the tools and support necessary to address safety concerns. Implementing comprehensive mental health programs not only aids in the personal development of students but also fosters a safer school environment by mitigating potential threats from within.

In conclusion, while physical security measures have their place, they should not overshadow the necessity of mental health support in schools. A holistic approach that combines both aspects will more effectively ensure the safety and well-being of students.
