Ein Zirkuswagen und ein Frachtcontainer dienen dem Steinmetz Michael Spengler als Werkstatt. Hier empfängt er Menschen in Trauer. Gemeinsam gestalten sie Grabsteine, die von den Toten erzählen. Die Eltern Neustadt haben ihren 2-jährigen Sohn verloren. Im Dialog mit Michael finden sie Worte, die ihren Gefühlen Ausdruck verleihen. Aus Worten werden Material und Form. Der rauschende Atem des Kindes soll sich in einem fragilen Kalkstein widerspiegeln. Hardburg Stolle ist keine Frau der vielen Worte. Unter Michaels Anleitung schwingt sie beherzt den Hammer, um einen Findling zu spalten und spürt eine Kraft, die lange vergraben war. Familie Jacob ringt um die Essenz aus dem langen Leben des Großvaters. Der Naturverbundene, Lebemann, Patriarch. Wie sieht ein Objekt aus, dass ihn im Kern trifft? Michael hilft ihnen über die Grenzen ihrer Vorstellungskraft hinaus. Sensibel begegnet er dem Material und den Menschen und begleitet jede Familie auf eigene Art auf dem oft monatelangen Weg. Schritt für Schritt, Entscheidung für Entscheidung. Der Film erzählt von diesem mühevollen und intimen Prozess und zeigt wie die Arbeit am Stein den Tod im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes be-greifbarer macht. Die Steine nehmen Form an. Und in den Angehörigen reift ein neues Verhältnis zu ihren Toten - und zum Leben.
