Sutherland is compassion. This novel is the tenth book in the Wings of Fire series and describes the events of a quest that a SandWing named Qibli and an IceWing named Winter go on to stop a powerful NightWing named Darkstalker. Darkstalker is an ancient NightWing that is known for his power and the destruction he has caused to the content of Pyrrhia. Darkstalker had been put into a deep slumber by a group of dragons that tried to stop him, but he has awoken from that slumber.  Now Darkstalker has seemed to have changed and is trying to make things better in the world, but Qibli is suspicious of him. Qibli attends school at the Jade Mountain Academy and Darkstalker was sleeping under the Jade Mountain, where the academy is, until he was awoken. Darkstalker then started to work with the teachers and other students at the school to try to correct his actions and improve life for his tribe. At the school is where Qibli got to know Darkstalker and while his friends trusted him, Qibli was suspicious. It turns out that Qibli was right and that Darkstalker is trying to take over Pyrrhia and start another war between the different tribes of dragons. Qibli then finds out that everyone has so been trusting of Darkstalker because he put them under a spell, but Qibli is able to break that spell through the use of enchanted earnings. Qibli gets the support of his friend to Winter to go after Darkstalker and stop his evil plans, which they are able to successfully by using a spell to make Darkstalker lose his memories and start a new life. Throughout this book Qibli, Winter, and the other dragons they work with along the way face constant adversity, near death scenarios, and there are many battles. However despite this I chose to describe the novel with the word compassion. 
     To defeat an all powerful dragon and save the world one might think that strength and power might be the most important, but I believe and the way that the author describes this novel it is actually compassion.  You not only need strength, but you need compassion and to be compassionate towards other people, in this case dragons, to be successful. Qibli has compassion towards the dragons he works with throughout the novel and tries to do everything he can to help them. Qibli is also a SandWing and has to work with many other tribes of dragons that do think or act the same way as he does. However, Qibli treats everyone with compassion and this allows him to form strong bonds with those around him. He is able to work with Winter and other dragons such as Queen Thorn of the SandWings because of this compassion and empathy he has for others. Qibli is able to build fellowship among his team and crate strong bonds with the dragons he works with throughout his journey. He would not have been able to defeat Darkstalker and save the world without this empathy and compassion he has for others. Qibli and Winter would have not been the strong dragons and strong team they are without compassion and would have not had the will power to continue their harsh journey without care for another. For example; "Please let him be all right, Qbili prayed as they dug" (Sutherland 177). This is a quote from the novel that shows Qibli's conern as they are looking for a missing dragon named Smolder. There are many examples of this compassion and empathy and this is just one. Winter and the other dragons also have empathy and compassion for each other and for Qibli. This is makes them strong and even though they are less powerful than Darkstalker they are able to defeat him. Having compassion and care for on another will make you much stronger, allow you to work with others, and to be better person than one with only physical strength or power can bring.

These hands show people of different races and backgrounds coming together and showing compassion for each other. The people are loving each other and working together, represented by the hands, just as Qibli, Winter, and the other dragons in Wings of Fire do.
