"Stay gold, Ponyboy, Stay gold" (Pg.147) This quote was made by Pony's friend Johnny. Johnny told Pony this to let him know that he doesn't need to be a "hood" and to stay pure. This is a really important quote in "The Outsiders" because it makes Pony realize that he isn't like the Socs and he doesn't need to fight.

"You get tough like me and you don't get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin' can touch you..." (Pg. 147) The quote teaches Pony that he needs to toughen up and look out for himself. He can't let his emotions get the best of him and he needs to stay strong.

"'can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?'
She blinked, startled, then smiled. 'Real good.'
'You can see it good from the East Side, too, "I said quietly." (Pg. 129-130) This is the moment where Pony starts to see that the Socs had similar lives as the greasers and that they are not all bad, just misunderstood.

One important setting in "The Outsiders" was the abandoned church in Windrixville. The church was the place that Johnny and Pony spent most of their time when they were hiding from the police. This is where the most character interaction happened between Johnny and Pony. They exchanged a lot of emotions, both happy and sad.

The diamond represents the age and quality of the church. It also represents the hard ground they had to sleep on because a diamond is the toughest material. The text stated, "That floor was stone, and hard." (Pg. 67) This is one of the times that the hard floor was mentioned in the book.

One major lesson that the main character, Ponyboy learns is to be true to himself. Throughout the novel, "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, Pony learns that he shouldn't care what people think and that there is no point in fighting the Socs over their riches. He realizes he needs to "stay gold" and not be a "hood" so he can become the person he is meant to be.

The lesson that Pony learns teaches me that I need to stay as my pure self. I don't need to judge everything and I don't need to worry about what people think about me.

At the beginning of the story "The Outsiders", Pony is full of hate towards the Socs and his brother Darrel. Throughout the book, Pony has a lot of different emotions that make him see that the Socs are not that bad and that they are misunderstood. The text states, "It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and, the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different." (Pg. 40-41) This shows a point where Pony was realizing that the Socs' lives aren't so different from the Greasers'.

He also starts to understand that Darry is only yelling at him because he is worried about him getting hurt and Darry can't stand the possibility of losing another member of their family. Pony goes from constantly hating people, to trying to understand them more.
