He ordered all citizens to turn in any gold coins they had to the nearest bank in exchange for dollars. Within the next year FDR took america off the gold standard completely. This dropped the dollar down 60% now the government could print as much money as they needed the make the economy grow.

When FDR became president US was in the middle of the depression, when he died America was the richest and most powerful nation in the world. He shouldn't have all the credit for it but he played a big part in that success.
